Here's a stupid question re: brakes

So, every road brake caliper I've seen comes with a little piece of tape on it. I've always thought it must be used for protecting the part from scratches in production, so I take it off.

Am I courting disaster**********???!!!!!!!!!!!

You've got bigger problems if you think that a piece of tape is going to have anything mechanically to do with braking on your bike. Just saying
