Alternatives to replace Altus A10 Shifter/Break Levers?
Just picked up an early 1990's 21-speed Rockhopper for my 13-year old to use as his neighborhood ride. It has the Shimano Altus A10 integrated shifters/brake levers and derailleurs. I'd like to replace the shifters/brake levers but keep the existing derailleurs and brakes, if possible. It's tough to find A10 shifters. Any suggestions for what would work with the other A10 components?

Shimano has offered low cost brake/shift lever combos in a 7x3 spec. Available in "v" or canti brake spec. Not sure if they're in Shimano's 2014 line still but some interweb searching should get the answer. Also you might try Ebay. Andy.

The Shimano EF65 brake/shift levers should be a compatible replacement for your A10's and can be found under $30. They'll work with either cantilever or v-brakes -- there's a little red selector tab inside the lever where the brake cable attaches. Set one way, it's for v-brakes. Unscrew it and turn it around and the levers will pull the right amount of cable for cantis.

You need to get the "4 finger" version vs the "2 finger" ones for the canti braking option.

Thanks guys. So what's the difference between the EF65 and EF51 besides the appearance?
Also, now I'm thinking I should probably replace the rear derailleur while I'm at it. It's a direct mount and I'm assuming long cage? Would something like this work? Amazon.com: Shimano RD-TX35 Tourney Rear Derailleur (SGS Long Cage 6/7 Speed Regular Mount): Sports & Outdoors
Other suggestions?
Thanks again!

Is there a reason you are replacing these parts?
IF your RDER is currently functioning, I'm not sure what you would really gain by swapping in basically the lowest level Shimano RDER.
Maybe you need a cable cleaning/lube instead?

One of the adjusting screws on the lever is totally stripped.
You're right, I should probably just leave well-enough alone and keep the RD.
