Sturmey for 2014-2015: new hubs

Here's Sturmey's catalog for the following couple years.

It describes new a new 5-speed family of rotary shift hubs, a new 4-speed family of rotary shift hubs, a new up-market single speed hub with an aluminum hubshell and roller actuated coaster brake and some new dyno hubs w/o drum brakes.

PDF download.

The all-up 4-speed looks to be two stages of the three stage XRF8(W), but with a different driver that will accept standard AW-style cogs.

The five speed looks good on paper. 64%, 80%, 1/1, 125%, 156%; even +25% steps; 243% overall. "Designed for heavy duty use". Drum brake, disc brake, coaster brake and freewheel versions.

According to the catalog, the S50 hubs, like the XRF5(W), will be discontinued.

New junk to replace the old junk. Gotta give them credit for how they keep trying on that five speed. A stand alone dyno with half the power output of Shimano/SP/Son/SRAM, oh boy!

3w is 3w, whats the issue..?

I see I can replace the 15t on my AW3 with a 3/32" thick one with all 15t, I've been using one adopted from the Sachs-Brompton 3 by 2 hub,

for the 2 speed 2 cog shifting every 5t tooth was shorter.

4 speed 210%, 28% jumps, is (internals not compared) a resurrection .. 5 speed 243%, 25% jumps, has been offered for a few years , ..

the S1C has been promoted in Ads , but now is catalogued ..

Nice to see a classic thumb shifter for the 8 speed. I like that they have stainless dome nuts now too, been a long time coming. They also have seatpost clamp shifters too, that's kind of neat I guess. I liked the gear range on my xrf-5 but it never seemed to want to stay in adjustment. I have and love my drum-dynamo and haven't noticed a lack of power output with it.

SA's 3W requires higher speed than SON/SRAM/SP/Shimano. SON/SRAM/SP/Shimano can develop over 6W and there are LED lights on the market today that specifically exclude SA from the list of hubs that will drive them. SuperNova triple is a good example.

I have two SA drum/dyno hubs, probably their best product, but if they want to make an improvement they could. It seems as if anyone that rides it ends up with issues on the five speed hub.

The dynamo works fine with my B&M lights and I don't move very fast.

It does look like an improvement. worth a try.
So with the 48/18 I have been using .......
Old RD5w gets GIs 45.3/ 54.3/ 72.5/ 96.6/ 115.9 ... 1st a bit high, otherwise flies with a wind, good on flats and downhill.
With more sensible 48/19 --- 42.9/ 51.5/ 68.6/ 91.5/ 109.8 ------ I'll be using this for starters on my tour bike. 3rd any less is useless.

New R-RD5 gets 46.4/ 58.0/ 72.5/ 90.6/ 113.3 ... Middle gears better. 1st and 5th suffer for me. Most will like the change.
----With 48/19 --- 43.9/ 54.9/ 68.9/ 85.7/ 107.0 ...1st gear better. 3rd better into a light wind, but wiz out at bad speed/17, 4th will be better with a light breeze. 5th loses 4 mph.

I will likely try the new hub by next year. My 5w only has trouble with the key going back inside. Last year I found it had mushroomed where it joins the clutch I guess, I sanded it off. I don't think the new hub will become a rust bucket like the Alfine 8 which has that goofy 3+" ball run on the shell yet.

I have a SA dyno with an Edelux light that jumps to life with the first push out of my garage. 7 or 8 mph ??? NOT needed

MEC has some nice ALU bikes with the new Shimano 5 spd and a twist shifter. However I said it was totally stupid with 2 finger levers.
