Asymmetrical BB Spindle
I want to replace the Shimano 600 FC6207 double crank on my Panasonic Road bike with a Shimano 600 FC6206 triple crank. The 6207 uses a 116mm spindle (symmetrical). The 6206 is supposed to use a 121.5mm spindle (symmetrical). I prefer to use the original type of loose bearing/cup assembly, not the sealed type of BB. I don't have the spindle I need and understand that I may have to dig pretty deep to get one. Also there isn't much money left in my budget to buy one this month.
Just ordered a used BB assembly supposedly taken from a Trek 1100. All the parts are in excellent condition. My problem is the the spindle is not the right size and is asymmetrical. The id on the spindle is CrMo3T and MTBS101. Total length is 126mm. Left side = 32mm, Right side = 37mm.
My question is; can I use this spindle instead of the preferred 121.5mm spindle. I don't want to mess up my crank arms. I understand that, while not rare, these are not easy to obtain. I'm not worried about a less efficient Q factor. I realize I'm probably being overly cautious. I really need a triple on this lovely old bike now because of my high mileage knees and the local hilly country.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

kehomer, As long as the taper of the BB spindle and the crank arms match, there will be no damage to the crank arms. Otherwise it'll work and while the pedal's tread width will be unequal and perhaps a touch wide, if it's within your comfort zone you're good to go.
