Shimano 5700 Shifter Warranty Question
The right shifter on my 5700 105 bike has a problem that has been slowly getting worse (currently has about 13k miles.) When you click the brake lever to downshift sometimes you get the double-downshift no matter how gingerly you try to downshift one gear. The RD only shifts once so it's pretty annoying to keep having to click up once after the inadvertent double downshift. I had the same issue with the 9000 polymer cables as the current PTFE ones so I'm pretty sure it's a shifter issue (the polymer cables literally required half the force to downshift.) It used happen maybe 1/10 shifts but now it's more like 3-4/10 shifts it happens and in the drops it's even more frequent.
Since the shifter is not obviously "broken" do I have any shot at getting a warranty replacement?
Edit: Update 10/2 I mailed the failing shifter to Shimano's warranty dept along with the warranty form posted on their website and I had a brand new shifter free of charge 1 week later.

I doubt that the shifter is broken. There are other possibilities that could cause your problem. Have you tried adjusting the shift cable at the barrel adjuster? If not try a 1/2 turn clockwise to move the upper pulley slightly outward. Is there any chance that the derailleur hanger could be bent? Have you tried flushing out the shifter with WD40? I doubt that will fix it but it won't hurt to try.

The bike shifts perfectly (in both directions BTW) if you can get it to click once. It indexes fine (no skipping/stuttering) so I'm pretty confident it's a shifter issue and not an RD issue. I don't see how adjusting the cable tension would change anything. Cables/housings are only 2/12 months old.

What he is trying to say is: Is the shifting problem an adjustment problem, or a defective part.
Have you had the bike tuned up by a bike shop, or at least had a shop try adjusting the rear derailleur cable tension and travel limits?
In many cases when you buy a new bike from a bike shop, the original owner gets free tune-ups on the bike for the lifetime of the bike.

I moved away from the area I bought the bike from but my local shop replaced the housings/cables in May and tuned it up. I believe it's something with the shifter because I've fine tuned the barrel adjuster so it shifts perfectly (no skipping or stuttering and the limit screws are set fine as well.) Just the annoying double downshift click when you're only trying to click down one gear.

things may have changed since then
but shimano products that came on bikes were treated the same as those sold as retail
oe manufacturers of bikes with shimano parts
generally have a one year parts warranty
and will handle shimano warranty claims within that period
but outside of oem warranty
shimano still supports two or three years from dop of the bike
this was my experience anyway

If it is still under warranty it probably isn't worth the hassle anyway. Bring it to a shop and explain what it is doing and have them look at it. It probably just needs adjustment. The tolerances on these things is pretty tight, so while it may look right, it doesn't take much for it to be out of spec. Also, someone else already said it, is the hanger bent? It doesn't have to be visibly bent to be out of alignment. I have the alignment tool, and it really makes a difference to get that right. All the noise goes away, all the shifts are smooth. I've used it a second time on one bike and was surprised to see it was out of alignment again even though I don't remember banging it.

With Trek, warranty is one year on non-Trek components. Your brand may differ and it's worth asking. Even if it is out of warranty coverage, if you move to a new place and present as a new potential customer, the shop may still go to bat for you with a warranty claim, and even if warranty coverage is only one year, Shimano may still cover it.
My experience is that Shimano is more of a stickler for warranty terms than SRAM...

Just wanted to bump the thread to let everyone know you can interface directly with Shimano's warranty department. I mailed the failing shifter to Shimano's warranty department along with the warranty form listed on their website and I received a brand new shifter free of charge 1 week later.
