Univega Safari Ten, worth it?

What year might this be? I tried to google it so maybe '79? The seller is asking $80 and knows nothing about the bike.

A very popular entry level model. Some of the Safari bikes came with chrome steel wheels. But, the frames are great. You could get some alloy wheels for it & a set of racks & make it into a fine touring bike. $80 sounds about right. But start at $60 and see what happens.

Is that a cottered crank? I think it is, which rules out 80s. If that's a cottered crank, it would be another good way to save weight.
Replace the wheels (if they're steel, hard to tell- bring a magnet), get an alloy crank, switch to downtube shifters and it's a nice bike.

The crank looks to be Silstar which is a cheaper 3 piece alloy crank with built in Chainguard these were popular and came on lot of entry level bikes in the early 80's.

I'm almost certain it's a 3 piece cottered crank. You can see the cotter pin and nut.

I really can't tell from my screen if its a cottered crank. But, ..... hmmmm, is the front brake caliper missing? It's also a long legged big boy bike. At least a 60cm frame. That color looks early 80's to me.

Good catch, the front brake is missing. No big deal if he has a local bike co op.
And as the ad says it's a 58cm. I'm 5'7" with a 32" inseam and my 58cm Fuji Sagres fits perfectly.

I mentioned the missing front brake caliper and he dropped the price down to $70 and won't go any lower. I'd rather the price be $50 or $60 but is the $70 a fair price?

It is a fair price, but that Sirrus would be really nice with some drop bars.
Edit: just saw earlier post. You might get a better deal if you wait, but assuming there's a local bike co-op that could get you a cheap wheelset (assuming old ones are steel), maybe a crank, and (depending on your preferences) DT shifters and brake levers with no extensions, I'd get it.

I'm going to pick this up tomorrow at $70 and the Sirrus gave me a $100 counteroffer. I think I'll get that one too...and the Trek for $100.
