1985 Cycles Gitane Record

I recently unearthed this 85' Gitane. It is mostly all original down to the san marco lazer saddle. Full Campy Triomphe. There is a suspicion of foul play with the wheels the rear is a Regina which straightend up after some spoke turning and the from is Mavic (red sticker) both are laced to campy hubs. I was wondering if anyone has seen these before or knows what it could be worth.

$250 to $400 depending on mechanical condition. Sell the seat separately - if it cleans up well you could get $75+

I had a purple Gitane where about 30% of the paint had faded to silver. The French really didn't know how to paint stuff, even into the 80s apparently.

80's Gitanes had very fragile decals. My brother's Gitane Criterium's decals were literally just falling off on him after only a couple of years. I don't know why Gitane did not clear coat their decals over like Peugeot did with their bikes back then.

As far as value I'd agree with this. Would be a shame to part the saddle from the bike, but you would definitely get more money that way by selling the bike locally then putting the saddle up on ebay.

+1

I had a '72 TDF that was two tone (silver and red) because it apparently sat in front of a window for a number of years.

As for the wheels the hubs are likely original. I suspect this bike may have had tubular/sewups originally and some relaced the current rims to it for utitlitarian purposes and just used a couple of nice rims thay had on hand. While it would be shame to paritally part this bike out as said taking the sadle and maybe the pedals off the bike and selling them seperately on E-bay and the bike locally will get you more money. As for value I would guess about $300 as is. While just wouldn't have the hart to do a shrewd seller could get a couple of hundered more out of it maybe more if they stripped it and sold it in pieces. Price what the saddle and Campy components are selling for tight no on E-bay you may be surprised.

Wow thanks alot guys. This forum is a fountain of information. The more I ride this bike the more I think I'm gonna keep it original and just ride it. I like the Patina on it ( one of a kind) and the fact that it looks exactly the same as it did in the catalog in 1985. thanks again guys and any pictures of information on these crazy French bikes is greatly appreciated.
