Motobecane Grand Touring
Hi I have a motobecane grand touring bike, looks to be late 1960's? It in a cool yellow with a little patina. I found this ont he side of the road and cleaned it up and placed new tires on it. Components all look original or time period correct at least. I was hoping to get more information about the bike and maybe suggestions to the price.

Still learning
Probably more like late 70's with braze on cable guides and cotterless cranks. You'll need better photos, outoors if possible. If in a metro market, clean paint, good chrome, a fully overhauled and refurbished bike with new cables, housing, bearings, tires, etc., $250 +/- 10%. More in the spring.

Hello,
Nice score, you did not mention type of brakes or other equipment....in any event a very nice score and yellow may not be so common... depending on your area I would say an easy 200 to 250.00.

Motobecane stopped placing the braze-on rear brake cable guides along the side of the top tube after the 1976 model. According to their catalog specs, there was no yellow Grand Touring in 1975 or 1976 (that might vary by country though). The following link has scans of Motobecane catalogs from 1970 to 1985. The catalog specs from 1975 to 1970 don't indicate color options, but you might be able to identify the year of your bike by comparing component specs, if your components are at least partially original.

Thanks, I will take a few more pictures when I finish up other work and find a good camera. I'm not familiar with the brand but it seems to be in business today. The Motobecane bikes you see today aren't made by the same company. The original French company went bankrupt in 1981 and was purchased by Yamaha. The bikes are now made in Taiwan.

MAFAC racer brakes. Looks like perhaps a Stronglight 63 crank set. Pivo stem. The smaller type face on the down tube. I'd say 1970 to 72.

Thanks for telling me that the stem looks weird I did not know they can be adjusted...Not sure how to lower the stem, would i remove the bolt on the top of the stem? Do I loosen the rings around the head tube?

Based on the equipment, probably 72 or 73. Crank looks to be a Stronglight 49, Huret shifters and derailleurs. I had a blue one like this. Nice riding bike.

Not sure if they will stay. I also was hoping to ask someone what to do about the brake lever handles, they seem to be dry rotted. Are there replacements? I do not want to update the handle bar grip tape, it is in great shape and original...

When you say brake lever handles, I assume you mean the small pads on the top of the levers. Those can be bought but typically are not cheap. If you are not obsessed with keeping the bike original, look for some Weinman levers to replace them. I understand Cane Creek hoods fit them just fine.
