Unknown Schwinn worth it?

I came across this Schwinn looks in decent shape, would it be worth getting as a second bike, if it's my size?

Not so much a second bike, more of a 8th or 9th bike.

Is it worth $25? Yes If you need a bike that you do not need to worry about locking up outside or something? It is not a great bike or even a very good bike. Perfect for a college kid on a budget.

For $25 it's not a big risk. If you want to turn it into a useable, nearly indestructible bike, price out all the stuff you'll have to do: chain, brake pads, cables, housings, freewheel (maybe), tires, tubes, rim strips, bar tape, grease, bearing balls, and realize that at the end you'll have a very nice riding bike that's worth about $100, plus or minus. It will still be heavy, it will still have steel rims (I'm assuming), but hey, it can still be a good bike and provide inexpensive transportation and a lot of fun and satisfaction. If you are interested in fixing other bikes, there are probably more than $25 worth of parts. Weinmann centerpulls, for example, are not rare or valuable, but if you need them for a project and don't have any, that's a problem. Pedals for an Ashtabula crank? Need some in the middle of the night, there you are. You could probably strip the parts and sell just the frame for $25 or more. Assuming there is no damage to the frame other than scratches and the like. I don't think you can dent those things -- when I was I kid, I tried my best to screw up electro-forged Schwinns. It's really hard to do.

Actually, the bike doesn't look too bad in the pics. But, inspection is the key. If the fork is straight and there is no damage to the top tube or down tube from a crash and no bending to the stays, or the like, I think it's worth $25 and very well may be worth saving from the scrap heat. Even old Schwinns need, and deserve, love.

Thanks yall, I'm getting back into riding after a few years off, I have my road bike I pull my kid on his tag along, but was looking at this like a grocery getter like you said if I find something else use it for parts maybe. Also being a bigger guy the steel wheels aren't to bad.

That appears to be a 1977 Schwinn Sierra with a 24" frame in Flamboyant Red.

While it was called the Sierra in '77, most people would know it as a Continental. Schwinn used the classic Continental name up until '76, then they renamed it as the Sierra for '77, the Continental II for '78 and '79, and finally back to just the Continental in '80 and later. A bit of an identity crisis but that's how it was.

While some may disagree, I really like the '70s Continental/II/Sierra and feel that one is easily worth more than $25.

I don't know how you do it. The cheapest brake pads I'd put on a bike are $7 to $8. New tires and tubes are what, $15/wheel? Chain is $6 to $10. Bar tape, cables and housing. Doing all that and servicing the hubs, BB and headset and truing the wheels all in three hours, you're a much better bike mechanic than I am.

That looks like one of those boat anchor Schwinns. One piece crank. Steel wheels. Bolt on wheel in back. Front wheel looks like it may be quick release. Front fork doesn't match the rest of bike. May be a replacement part. Schwinn was trying to make their bikes indestructable for the end of the world as we know it back then. When the planet explodes, that thing will be floating around in space somewhere. Yep $25 sounds right. Have fun.

If your looking for a grocery getter look for a mountain bike or even a hybrid. Or actually what do you pull the kids with? If you already a bike with trailer on it that is perfect for the grocery store.

WOW it is slim pickens for a bikes down there!

You're fast and prepared. I apologize for my remark -- it was uncalled for.

This might be a better value and a better errand bike. Giant Bicycle for sale A Giant Hybrid $30

$30 bucks for this a good tune up and you're ready to roll. This will also be much easier to mount a rack on too.

Looks like a bent fork on this one, maybe the frame too.

Remember Dr. Strangelove? I imagine the plane's crew looking out the bomb bay door, "Hey, that looks like Slim Pickens down there!"

edit: here's a link to a youtube clip of the famous scene from Dr. Strangelove with Slim Pickens riding the bombhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snTaSJk0n_Y
