Chrome Gitane with Campy Record nuovo record
So I'm staying at an AirBnB this weekend in the Texas hill country for a ride, and i spot some old wheels rusting away out by a shed. Naturally, I have to go take a look at them. They are Mavic rims on Campy Record hubs! I call the owner to say they shouldn't be rusting away out there and I'd be interested in buying them. The owner says he has a bike to go with those wheels in a storage unit, and he brings it over. After a quick and easy negotiation I took home an extra bike. She is a bit crusty and needs an OA bath badly.
She obviously needs an OA bath, but anyone know what model and year it is? I had a 74 Gitane but it had different branding so it's later than that, 78 maybe? I haven't checked the Campy patent dates or anything, just picked it up.
What's with the drillium on the big ring, was that available stock, or was all that done to order or done on your own? That big ring is only 48, maybe it was after market?

Probably a Sugino 48 ring - and yes, the drilling there is stock.
I'd be interested in knowing if that seatpost (or the stem, for that matter) can be removed. That's purty crusty looking
Sorry I can't be of more help determining age or model, but I'm sure a Francophile will be along shortly to answer all.

That's a crusty barn find all right. I'll bet there will be some headaches trying to take this apart. Great find though; I would have taken it home as well. Hard to value given the condition though. I wouldn't pay much for this bike as is, maybe a $100 or so.

Yeah.. I dropped $60 on all of it, but I really would have given that just for the wheelset. I thought that was a great deal, especially given the inflated prices I normally see in Austin. I've been looking for the right wheels for my Gitane Tour de France for 3 years. Granted, I haven't been looking all that hard. The frame isn't my size so I'll probably strip it and use all these campy bits on my Tour de France, and build this back up with its parts... minus the missing wheelset of course.

I guess I don't need to know a total worth, I just want to know if any of the components or frame are SUPER rare or something like that. I know a fair amount but I always check with you guys to see if I missed anything.

I've been thinking of getting a sonic parts cleaner... this may be the job for it.
Any clue what year it is?
