Is this Trek 560 fake?
Looking to add another Trek to the collection I saw this one on ebay, second time posted- no bids on the previous listing. I was going to bid on it and looks like I would have gotten it for $200 since I would have been the only bid. But then I did a bit of amateur detective work and decided not to bid.
Reasons:
1. The logos are pink- assuming this is a 1984 (per Trek website black/red) then pink is wrong. OK so I thought maybe the red had faded, but seller verified logos are pink.
2. Down tube has 'Trek' on it and seat tube has '560'. Any example I could find of a Trek 560 has 'Trek 560' logo all as one on the down tube. Also the top tube should have script on it, this one doesn't. The bottom of frame behind the crank also would say 'Trek 560' and I don't see it here.
3. This ebay 560 has Shimano 105 components, not Suntour as shown in Trek 1984 brochure. I don't know if it would have been an option back then to take 105 instead of Suntour?
4. The seller upon request told me that the serial number is 318745 which I couldnot find on the Trek site.
I don't know enough about vintage Trek to know by looking, if fork, frame, etc is correct- maybe an expert here can give an opinion on that and the bike as listed. Is this an original Trek 560? A modified 560? Something else pretending to be a 560?
thanks

Why would anyone intentionally make a faux 560? There are several reasons why things don't add up. I am no trek expert but the decals look more late '80s to me. The 105 looks more like '87ish to me than '84. It could be someone rebuilt their 560 with some 105 they bought, it could be a warranty frame, who knows.
If it is close to you go look but as a pawn shop is selling it I would not rely on them for many details.

If you already have a 360 from the same year, you're not gaining anything more than slightly better components and wheelset.

True. I was looking for a slightly larger frame than the 360 I have, and black. Happy enough with the 360 but always looking at alternatives

I guess no one would make a counterfeit 560- not worth the time and effort I suppose. But if it isn't a 560 why put those decals on? And if it's not a 560, what is it? Is it even a Trek frame?
Obviously I have too much time on my hands.

I would say it's real you can see the Trek branded seat cluster and dropouts, in the pics which only appeared on 80's Treks. Looks like some of the components may be replacements considering it's being sold pretty much as is by a pawn shop the price is about right.

Got it- now that is where expertise comes in. I took a look in close-up of the seat cluster and compared it to other images of Trek seat cluster, looks the same. And now I know something I didn't! Still, does not appear to be standard 1984 560 which may good or bad, no? Maybe like someone else pointed out it was a replaced frame- I guess that would explain a lot.
BTW I wound up purchasing another Trek 560 that I found searching ebay completed listings of bikes that did not sell. Just msg the seller 'hey you still have that bike' and go form there. Often get a better deal that way too. A useful skill set.

Definitely not fake, my brother had the mtb bike late 80s, same color scheme and pink decals. Would be right time for earlier 105 builds, which is rock solid btw. That bike is a decent deal @ 200 for ebay, though overall vintage prices have become pretty soft across the spectrum so you see a lot of things just sitting and the sale prices on comparables are same or lower.
edit, looks like a 1987 model which was his mtb model year too, I say original bike, and decent, but not screaming, deal for ebay if it fits.

its a 1988 model, the logo changed in 1988 , if it was a 1987 or earlier it would be a different Logo. the color noted from the catalog was Black with Magenta decals. (magenta is mistaken for Pink alot!). 1984 was the only year that Treks had the model number on the Downtube with the Trek logo. I have a 1986 560, and in 1987 the 560 came in two models the 560ex which had Shimano 600 SIS and the 560 which was Shimano 105, in 1988 they dropped the 560ex and kept the 105 equipped 560.

I snagged this VG condition 1986 560 Pro Series yesterday. Will probably hang a 105 group on it.
