The good --- Early 90's 8 speed (not 7) 600 tri color group, DT shifters with dual pivot brakes--- there was a point in the early 90's where 8 speed was trickling down but it took another year or 2 to get brifters on some groups

The bad-- attached to a barely used Giant , but not my size - seller is asking $180 "firm"

Would it be worth paying $150 with the thoughts just being on the group?
Ive done this before with a few bikes and have thus far been able to put a lot of parts to good use, -- just a little Bleh on picking up a nice machine just to part it out -- again

OTOH, 8 speed with DT does not show up much and would be right at home on almost anything within reason i could put it on, and i believe you can easilly use a 9 or 10 speed cassette on the wheels, and i have had good luck over the past year getting friends involved in the sport with good prices on a nice vintage build

If hardly used and not rusty, that's a great deal. A lot depends on whether it's full tricolor (probably, as Shimano was pushing full groups pretty hard then and not many manufacturers were diluting groups with home brand cranks and brakes) and if it's been ignored in a climate controlled area. Look behind the brake calipers to see if the springs are rusted. If so...

Yes, I would go for it. 8-speed 600 is mechanically and aesthetically excellent.

Sheesh ---- one of my cycling hobby resolutions for 2017 was "No more parts bikes until I purge some old framesets and seldom used bikes" -- but I'm not exactly a rock of discipline

$150 sounds good to me if you have a planned use for the group. Not sure if it's attractive enough to warrant a hoarding purchase.

Sounds like a solid plan...the $150 is not a bad price...and...as for hoarding...I have done better eliminating bikes last year...but...N+1 still applies!

Hoard away. I've been collecting nice groupsets for years. They take up less space than a complete bicycle, and every once in a while I actually install one on a frame-up build.


On the other hand, they can't be ridden...

Seller hasn't contacted me back and took his ad down, --- so I guess the market responded before I did , --- saving me the trouble


Funny how you can have a sigh of relief on one hand ---- and the other say to yourself - "Dangit -- it got away from me!"

I love sellers who cant even give a courtesy response to a text or email though -- a simple "Item is already sold" would suffice. The texting generation is removing all manners from society

Who said anything about making an offer to the seller? -- I never make an offer for anything sight unseen , but was just pondering if the group was worth a bill and a half -- as that's what I would likely do in person

I typically don't get to the offer phase until I look at the bike and start pointing out how much new tires , bar tape and other things like that are going to cost to have a safe machine again --
-- more often than not, if the bike's condition holds up in person , and the price was listed fair enough to catch my eye in the first place, -- I just pay what is being asked also

Sometimes people will take an offer just to get an unwanted piece of merchandise out of their hair, --- other times you show up to look at a bike and their garage looks like mine, -- then you realize if the price is pretty fair , he likely will not budge too much as he knows exactly what he has

Sorry I misunderstood when you talked abut the price, then the price you were willing to offer. I agree, negotiate in person just fine with me. Sellers saying firm may change that when the cash is flashed.

Epilogue:
Seller finally contacted me back --- turned out to be a Cannondale, not a Giant (Giant, Cannondale - whats the difference -- LOL )

--- Sheesh --- another one in the "why the heck don't people ride their bikes category (I'm going to post these pics in the vintage Cannondale thread --- its too pretty a bike not to share )

I have found several 25 year old bicycles in this very condition over the years, and I'm not even really looking that hard

Bike is catalog correct with exception of the stem and a new set of tires ---- there are water beads on the bike in the pics as it was raining heavily when I brought it in , the group is in beautiful shape ---- The only problem with the frameset is a scratch in the paint on the top tube but it doesn't look like it has gone through to aluminum

A shame to scavenge the group off an otherwise great bike I would be proud to ride, - but my top tube clearance is negative 1 --- I still may give it a run down the block to see how she goes first though

As you can see in the pics, the drivetrain is filthy though -- the reason is the owner was a motorcycle enthusiast and used thick viscous motorcycle chain lube on the chain and cassette,

@miamijim -- yep -- ultimately that was the plan anyway. Its a great bike, but its not a C Record equipped Ciocc or anything like that.

These finds always remind me of New Years resolutions . The same things that prompt people to buy $3000 treadmills. They tell themselves that they are getting serious and are going to spend a bit on some quality gear , but aren't going to go whole hog just yet on a home gym remodel,

Same with this bike, -- someone probably weighed this decision out carefully at the time , because this was a 12-1500$ machine in 1992, - so not a decision to take lightly , ---- then they ride it for 2 months and push it into a dark corner of the garage for 20 years

Oh well, ---- the nearly blemish free parts will look great on my next build

Nice snag - 8sp shifters from that group are tough to find.

You can easily sell the frame for what you paid = free parts.
