I have a Nice Trek 660... I think from 1986 that I want to sell soon.

Its in great shape and has some nice components.

I'm thinking value as is ranges from $300 to $350

My main question is should I swap out the crankset or any other parts before I sell... and if I did say replace the cranks or other parts with shimano 105 or shimano 600 stuff I have in my parts bin... could I still get $300 for the bike?

also thinking about keeping the saddle.

I always strip parts I like off a bike before I sell it. But you have to be careful what parts you take. Sometimes you'll get burned because a potential buyer sees the crappy saddle, tires, etc that you put on. Other times it's a non-issue.

I wouldn't expect you'd lose much with a 105 or 600 crankset on that bike, considering it didn't come with one complete group to begin with. If it was full Shimano 600 and you wanted to swap an SR crankset on there, then you might lose some.

I think you're right in the ballpark as far as price. Might want to give it a bath and take some new pictures though, it looks a bit dirty.

Yes... the bike will get a bath and a full tuneup... Once I part it out a bit. I'm going to swap out the crank for sure... have not decided on the saddle or rest of the drive train.

why swap anything? I may be in the minority but I think it looks great like it is. I would love one of those frames

I am guessing the Suntour derailleurs are an upgrade. I had a '85 660, Green with white decals, 9 speed bar end shifters and loved it but it was 1 size too small.

Agree with Jake, Clean it real good and put the bars in a more traditional position. I don't know about your location or this time of year but $300 for sure where I live.

Yes this one is one size too small for me as well... other wise it would be a keeper. I have a Trek 560 frame that fits me from the same era so I was thinking of putting the crank and saddle on that.

I'm thinking I probably could get the same money for the bike with a 105 crankset and a newer road saddle that I've got in my parts bin... saving the good bits for my self.

I recently paid $350 for a REALLY nice 85' 670, all original. I think there are two markets for your bike. One is people looking for a nice vintage steel ride. They probably won't notice or care much about components, assuming good quality. The other group would be enthusiasts looking for that particular bike. They will be very component sensitive. According to the Trek site some 1985 660's went out the door with SuperBe FD/RD.

I usually swap components when the bike is a frankenbike, an odd mix of some high end stuff. If the bike is original, I leave it alone.

For instance, I picked up a 1990 Trek 2000 (original spec the bike was only sold as a frameset). Bike had Campy brakes, Campy FD and crankset, Suntour Superbe Pro RD and levers, Dia Compe brake levers, Shimano 105 wheelset. So I raided the parts bin, rebuilt the bike as all 7 speed 105: crank, levers, derailleurs, brakes. I felt the bike was more marketable, and I was able to salvage some nice bits.

Myself, I would pull that saddle and replace with something decent.
