Unknown year Schwinn Traveller, worth 20 dollars? also some unknown Marco bike for 20
Someone is selling these 2 bikes. The Schwinn is the one that really interests me, I attached a picture below. The guy said that its dirty but not beatup or rusted.
The guy said it looks nice and the paint is in good shape. I like that it has a smaller frame.
Are these good bikes? i have a spare set of 700c rims that I built that I am considering putting on the Schwinn.
I would keep the Schwinn for myself if its worth keeping. How much are they worth in good shape.
The other bike is some Marco bike that he wants to sell at the same time. Its 40 for both but honestly I'm not really interested in the Marco bike. It appears to have cottered cranks and is a 5 speed.
What do you say?

I had a Traveller back in the early 80s. I liked it a great deal. I'd ride trails with my friends on mountain bikes and it handled it just fine.
Then I bought a Miyata mountain bike. It was quite a nice bike and lasted me for about 10 yrs (before being stolen), but I'm not certain that I would have been less happy just sticking with the Traveller.
I really don't know what it's worth, but it's a nice bike.

Looks like an '85 Traveler. Mid-level bike with double-butted chromoly frame.

Does it have aluminum rims? Or steel? The picture in your link looks like steel rims.

Should be aluminum rims if they're original. But the stem is not and that saddle looks wrecked. Sitting outside in the snow = beat. Realize that these bikes almost certainly need a complete overhaul (bearings greased, cables, housing, possibly tires, etc.) But for $40 it's worthwhile if you do the work yourself. You could probably re-sell the Marco for $10-20. I wouldn't put any money into it.
Schwinn looks to be about a 54cm frame, how tall are you? It could be worth about $150 in good ready-to-ride condition.

I have spare saddles. I'm not worried about doing the work, I love doing bike rebuilds. At the bike coop I volunteer at, I rebuilt an old beat to hell Schwinn Sierra into riding condition. Redid the cables, took the crank assembly apart and cleaned and repacked the bearings, redid the stem, and bent the rear derailleur hanger back into shape and repaired a frozen and bent rear derailleur. Works great now but still looks beat to hell. Will make a decent rider for someone who isn't into looks but wants something rebuilt and durable. So redoing all the work doesn't worried about that.
The guy doesn't want to split the bikes so I'm going to have to take the Marco.

Well I got it for 35 with the other bike. I am going to clean it up and get it looking nice and we shall see what happens. I am very heavy with a 30 inch inseam in regards to sizing.

It's on the 1985 specs pg 2 which I also provided a link for. Rims are Weinmann 416 27" x 1-1/4" aluminum alloy.

$20 for just about any older bike in good ridable condition is a good deal. If you clean them up nicely you can easily sell either one for a nice profit.

Well I think I kinda got a little screwed on the deal but I felt bad because the seller drove 35 miles each way to meet me so I bought the bikes. I didn't look close enough and the rear derailleur is a frozen mess. Not the parallelogram but the spring thingy that attaches to the hanger. that is frozen and the hex appears to be stripped out somewhat. Ugh.
And the front brake assembly is rather bent.
I tore the rest of the bike down as far as I could for now. I took the brakes off, the handlebars off, the seat out (yay, not frozen, aluminum to steel, was worried), the cogs off the crank, the chain, the front derailleur. At this point, I'm going to remove the cranks (service the bottom bracket) and somehow get the rear derailleur off. Then I can do a massive cleaning on the frame and fork. I will just clean it up as nice as I could and then wax it and hopefully it will look nice.
Then I can clean up the crank, the cogs, the rear brakes, the chain, the front derailleur, the seatpost, etc. Once I get all that done, I will start to reassemble.
Oh well, not the end of the world and I will save one more bike from being dumped.
