Is $500 too much for a clean (no rust, no dents, good paint, a few small wear marks and scratches) 1984 Colnago Master frameset? I really have no notion of their value. (I'm looking to buy, not sell).

Yeah, that title should read "Colnago" not "Conago" - even after I previewed the post I didn't catch it. That'll teach me to type before coffee.

incazzare.
I don't know, but before spending that money make 100% sure it is actually a Colnago. They seem to be one of the most counterfeited brands.

If it is what it says it is and is in excellent condition, that seems about right. Does it include headset and bottom bracket? Sometimes frames do, sometimes they don't.
To get a ballpark idea, check out completed ebay auctions for similar framesets, although keep in mind that ebay prices are sometimes pretty distorted

size and color and condition are everything. iv seen colnago track framesets with no bb or headset in "fair" cosmetic condition sell for $1000 usd on ebay. 'round my parts good examples of colnago road frame sets from the 80's go for anywhere between 300 and 1000, maybe more if it's something special. Lots of Colnagos got/get custom paint, so values vary wildly depending on the paint color and design. If its a cool color like black or red or it has a cool timeless custom paint scheme and it's not a huge size I would say $500 is fair so long as the paint is still glossy and it doesnt look like it was ridden hard and put away wet. look for rust spots around the edges of the lugs, try to look into the vent holes inside the head tube and bb with a flash light to gauge corosion levels.
as always just cause that price seems fair doesnt mean you shouldnt try to get it for less, we need a size and some pics to give you a negotiating stragegy. right now all i can say is show him 300 bucks in twentys, tell him the economy is crap and try to get him to bite.

Myself, I would rather pay more and get a complete bike. Unless you have a hefty stash of parts in hand, putting the appropriate components on that frame will not be cheap, and by the time you are done, will likely exceed what a decent deal would have cost on a complete bike (exceed by a lot!)
Even if you don't need the parts, a complete bike is usually the better bargain, as the sale of the unneeded components can help offset the price.
All that being said, $500 sounds about right for that frameset.

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.

I agree, $500 does sounds good for a frame like that. Just be prapared for much bigger hits on your wallet if you you do not have the parts yet to build it up yet.

I was able to sell that frame set for $600 on CL, but it took a few weeks. It's not a steal but, IMO, it's fair.

Someone posted a link in a recent thread for an early to mid 90s master frameset. It was going for $300. I sure wish I could find it because I would like to buy it. It appeared to be in decent shape and for that price it was a steal.

After seller sent many detailed pictures, I decided it is too much of a restoration project. Not as clean as it first appeared, and somehow he's now asking $600. It is my size and it's black, but like others have said, it'd cost too much to build. I don't have the photos, but it's on the Madison CL if anyone wants to check it out. Now if I'd just win the lottery I could get the new Master 30th Anniversary.

Unless the detailed pics show something ugly, I'd agree with Jet.
I would be highly tempted to buy a donor bike.
A quick transfer and you're off to the races.
That Master in black has a lot of appeal to me!

I guess he's now offering it for $450 without the bb. It's in decent shape, but the fork is rusty enough that it would need a re-chrome, and the whole thing really should be repainted. I will probably regret not getting it for a future project, but there are plenty of fish in the sea, or so they say.

Are you looking for a Colnago Master exclusively?

There's a small steel SLX Colnago on eBay, Auction + $1000 BIN. Campy parts. Veloce brakes, so maybe an '89? Some cosmetic issues, but hard to tell from the pix.

No, not exclusively, and what I want to do is build it with modern components, hence the search for a frame/frameset.
