1984 Motobecane Super Mirage
Hi everybody!
I'm new on this forum, so if my post does not belong here, all my apologies.
I've just got a 1984 Motobecane Super Mirage in mint condition. As I never understood the difference between a classic and a vintage, please help me in classifying my bike: classic or vintage?

Does it matter???? you have a nice looking older bike, no need to classify it. ride it

I have a '79 that was picked up last year for 60.00 that was dug out of an old barn. Still has the gumwall tires on it.
Nice bikes even though they were a few rungs up from the lower tier in terms of Moto's offerings. I hope you enjoy it, they are smooth and fun to ride. And not everybody has one.

many thanks for your kind words! I must admit I'm so excited about it (I was just about to say "about her"...) that I did not even ride her (sic!) yet!
could anybody help me identifying the year of fabrication? it is not from 1984, as I said before. the 1984 super mirage had a CroMo frame. mine has a vitus 888 one. many thanks once again!

1. Component date codes, add 6 to 12 months, as the french back were not noted for just in time inventory management. Google date codes, most of the parts on that bike will have them. Only challenge is once parts are replaced, the codes don't tell you much.

both hubs are marked atom 79. so, it shoul be from 1979 or 1980. the problem is that I cannot find a complete motobecane catalog from neither 1979 or 1980...

This is my attempt to answer the OP's question and based on nothing but my personal viewpoint.
"Classic" and "vintage" are IMHO interchangeable adjectives for the most part. With reference to bikes, I think of classic bikes as somewhat rare and revered bikes, because of one or more of the following:
Among the top 20-25% of high performance and expensive models within a brand line.
Especially noted designers or frame builders.
Noted racing or competitive history.
Noted following by collectors and enthusiasts
Defining icon of an era, in particular when it is the first model year edition of a wildly popular bike.
Trendsetter design that set off a new segment, like mountain bikes.
Vintage bikes might be any bike that is 20-25 years or more in age, incorporating both classic bikes and old garden variety mass market bikes.
Your European market Super Mirage is different in specification from USA bikes of the early 1980's era and thus you have a higher quality tubing set than the same model sold here.
