Is this bike worth $300?
A 1980s english well regarded maker road bike Reynolds 531 tubing.
Looks to be in good condition with no dents paint is fair.
Shimano 600 components I will likely be swapping most of them out.
Is it worth $300?

Probably not, especially if you're planning on swapping most of the components. Impossible to say without seeing it though.

Might be a bit high. Can't tell much without pix. I tend to think any full 531 frame in good condition with solid components is worth at least $200 though, so it's probably not way over. (And depending on what we're actually talking about, it could be a good deal.)

Without pics and an actual brand name there's no way to know.
Sears actually sold a Reynolds 531 framed Ted Williams bike back in the day, I seriously doubt you'd get $300.0 for one simply based on the frame material.

Maybe, maybe not. Need pictures and the maker to know. But I think it's in the ballpark. It's not like anyone is just giving away 531 bikes.

Since you will be changing out the components I would say no. $300 is a lot to pay for basically mystery frame with fair paint.

The bike in question is a Mercian.
From the pictures I believe it is the Olympic model.
Today I drove 100 miles and back to see it. Although there were no dents the paint was scraped off all over and the parts were pretty much worthless. I rode it and thought it was just ok.
I used to have Mercian in the 80s. it was a beautiful bike and I remember it having a nice ride.
I passed on it thinking I didn't want to spend $300 on it and now question the whole idea of buying a vintage bike.
To me, steel bikes are heavy, sluggish and don't ride all that well. I currently have an 80s Viner made out of Columbus tubing that I am fixing up for a friend and I can't say I care for the ride. My S-Works Tarmac SL3 blows the doors off it in every way which I guess shouldn't be a surprise. There is a gorgeous Mercian Vincitore on Ebay right now and I would buy it in a heart beat but I am sure the winning bid will be well above my budget.
