Trek 1987 330

Sorry could not download picture from my computer? frame is Reynolds 531. All components original except headset, rear rim and seat. Suntour front and rear derailleurs and down tube shifters, dia-compe brakes, sakae crankset, frame and paint in excellent condition. This was very first "good" bike. I just use it inside now on my trainer.

If maintenance is up to date and it has newish tires, about $300. If it's tired and needs work, about $125-150.

I disagree on the $300 unless it's in mint condition. The 330 was a lowend lugged steel bike with lowend components, $100 to $150 tops is more like it.

I sold one last fall for $285, in great condition. That's how I came up with "about $300".

Wow, you got quite a bit of money for that bike, I wonder what my 660 would sell for in Fenton MI? $1,000? I did notice that people do charge quite a bit more money for bikes in the Fenton/Flint area then they do here in Fort Wayne, for example currently there is a 83 Miyata Mixte bike for sale for $270 and here in Fort Wayne that bike would be lucky to get $150 in mint as they claim that one is. If a bike is overpriced here in Fort Wayne it sets on Craigslist for a very long time and never sells. Fort Wayne current has a 89 Fuji Del Rey for sale for $150 that has better componentry then the Trek 330 has.

The Trek 330 in 87 was the bottom of the line road bike for Trek using bottom of the line Suntour Alpha series with the second to the bottom of the line of the Alpha line the 3040 model derailleurs, and none of the index shifting Suntours worked as well as Shimano did.

Again this is just my opinion, but I wouldn't spend that much on a 330, and I like the older Treks especially the 600 and 700 series so I'm not bagging on those older Treks...just that one. I would consider spending that kind of money for a 500 series but it would be questionable if I would for a 400 series.

Thanks for all the replies. I was just curious if the bike was still worth anything. I originally paid $350 for it so I do not think it is worth anywhere near $300.
Does anyone out there still use any Suntour components?

What you originally paid for a bike doesn't necessarily mean much on what it could be worth today. Condition, and location mean quite a bit, too.

As far as Suntour, no one is selling new bikes with it. But, many forum members, myself included, like their vintage stuff a lot.

Got any pics of your bike?

It's a pretty ordinary bike but, don't despair. Trek bikes are well known for being almost indestructable. Great frames. If you advertise $125 it should sell pretty fast. $200 will take a long time. $300 is not going to happen. Nobody uses Suntour anymore. They went out of business in the early 90's. Too bad. Suntour was some of the best stuff around.

Certainly. There is no reason not to. I have first generation Cyclone on an '80 Centurion.

Suntour friction system was the best in the world and I still use Suntour Superbe on a 84 Trek 660 and ARX on a 84 Fuji Club, but the indexed system that Suntour came out too late with (other manufactures came out with index systems first and Shimano reigned supreme in that area) later failed miserably and was one of the reasons why Suntour went out of business. And the Alpha series you have was no exception to problems, add to that the particular series you have was second to the lowest end that Suntour offered and is in virtually zero demand today.

$300 is way overpriced. Here in Los Angeles people struggle to sell them for $200. I can only imagine what it must feel like trying to sell them for another hundred. With that pricetag, a cyclist could look into a newer bike with better components. Overall there are plenty of 300's out there and it is really sad that people try to attach a higher price tag on these, basically scamming novice cyclists. For $100 more they could get a Cannondale Sr500 in good shape. And quite frankly that bike would be newer, it would be mid-tier for it's year with better components. I don't think I've ever met anyone willing to pay that much. Don't get me wrong, it's a fine bike but the price is really, really high.

Suntour Cyclone and Superbe and even the VX is very highly regarded among vintage bike users. Cyclone and Superbe add a bit to the value, but not a whole lot especially compared to Campagnolo Record and Shimano Dura Ace of similar vintage in my area.

I think 300 is doable, but very difficult for a perfect condition 330; I sold mine for 275, but it really depends.

Vintage Campy has that Italian mystique that people are willing to pay more money for vs vintage Japanese components, but most people buying that stuff weren't alive and riding those bikes like a few of us were, and the Suntour soundly beat ANY derailleur manufacture on the planet for both quickness of shifting and reliability. Not until the patient ran out on Suntours slant parallelogram rear derailleur did Shimano jump fast and produced their derailleurs with that same design did any component manufacture match Suntours shifting capability.

Here's some interesting video's showing vintage vs modern rear derailleurs shifting:

Vintage Suntour Cyclone friction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EaCLUkK52w
Modern Campy Super Record Ergo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEmK0CKHpR8
Modern Campy Super Record EPS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2UWFVWua3k

Which one shifts better to you?

By the way here is a vintage Campy Nuovo Record friction system at work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDEv51xzBZ4

You don't have to convince me about Suntour. I became an expert at overhauling them when I got a bunch of VX-Gts and Cyclones, and I use them on my main bikes and tell everyone that they work great. I tell people that the Honor is just about as good as the Vx's but the only thing is it is heavier.

I was just saying that it seems that as far as vintage sales prices go it seems that Campagnolo Record > Shimano Dura-Ace > Suntour Superbe.

I think at this time... any name brand road bike with decent paint and is spotlessly clean... will bring a couple hundred bucks. People are hanging them on apartment walls and riding them to Starbucks on the weekends. I think in the Columbus/Dayton/Cincinnati area 300 is do-able.

I really like the Cyclone, friction, down tube mounted, shifting! It makes me feel like I am riding a bicycle.

I think it's interesting in those videos that the old friction Suntour Cyclone was actually shifting better than the Campy Super Record EPS, I knew that about Ergo and STI but not about EPS. What's also interesting, which I couldn't find a video on but go on experience that vintage Shimano SIS shifts a bit better than my Suntour Superbe and both shift far better than either my Shimano STI or Campy Ergo stuff.
