My new pseudo-vintage townie
I've seen a lot of great townie builds lately, so I thought I'd share my new build. This was my first from scratch project and I had a lot of fun. It's a great rider so far, too. The frame isn't vintage, but most of the parts are.
Frame/fork: Handsome Devil
Wheels: Shimano 600 tricolor/Mavic/Panaracer
Crank: TA Cyclotouriste single with Velo Orange 44t ring
Derailleur: Suntour arX long cage on Shimano 8 speed cassette
Shifter: Suntour barcon
Cockpit: Nashbar mustache/origin 8 threadless stem/Newbaums purple tape
Headset: Ritchey
BB: Shimano UN-55
Fenders: VO hammered
Rack: Blackburn EX-1
Saddle: B-17
Brakes: Dia-Compe/Tektro C720
Pardon the cable fray, my cutters died on me.

Brooks saddle, SunTour barcon & derailleur, TA Cyclotouriste -- what's not to like? I like the rack and mudguards, as well.

Nice bike! But please enlighten me, a simple European: I think I know what a "Riv" is (a slightly awkward-looking interpretation of a sports bike), but what defines a "townie"?

Very nice........ I really like the 1 x X setup on this type of bike. I favor thumb shifters, but that is because as klutz I hit barcons with my knee all the time

A bike for practical city riding, rather than sport. Commuting, errands, et cetera. I think single speeders invented the term.

Thanks! I thought about going that route, but the mustache bars keep the barcon safely out of the knee zone.

Thanks. In that case I would have expected a bit more "uprightness". Yours is more like a "sports townie", then? It actually looks like a pretty good long distance tourer ...

I think Townie is an appropriate description; pudgy tires, wide bars, simple gearing, rack and fenders. Plus with a drop to the bars and little in the way of reprieve other than hands close to the stem, trips too much beyond town will be a tough on the back and arms..keeping this one, mostly in town.

That said, I do lug my 25lb son to day care on it everyday, so it might work.

You won't find that one at the LBS...Local-bunk-shop.
The only thing I don't care for is the Brooks because I've never had one last more than a couple hundred miles...each one sagged. I give up. The ARX is cool I didn't know it could handle 8 cogs.

Actually this thread on the commuting forum was sort of the inspiration for the build:

Really nice package, especially the 1 X 8. I'm putting my SR town bike back to road spec and would like similar gearing on a new urban ride.
fwiw, moustachio bars are something I just can't ride but who gives a ****e what I like.
