Starting all over again : Raleigh

I regain this Raleigh Mountie frame and fork, 3 speed hub, seat pole that I once had.
It is a modified frame with the top tube replace with a longer one and the front fork cut down just a little.

Raleigh Mountie used to dominate the old capital of Spanish Town and were know as "Fourteen"

This is my quest to get one set up: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...d-bicycle.html
This is what it looks like:

They also comes in ladies wheel. I can get it converted.

I am the bike mechanic for this project. I will be doing all the work...
-insert spokes an tune wheels
-service Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hub
-assemble all other components.

Lets Begin - Modified Raleigh Mountie frame
(top tube replaced with a longer tube and front fork cut to reduce its height)

This is how it looked when I went for it.

I hope that seat post moves freely. Best to take it out if you don't have a saddle or clamp on top.

A film was also made then about the epicyclic gear system, which is the basis of all internal gear hubs.

Did you see those car prices- a Nissan Tiida (Versa) for $1.55 Million?

BTW- best of luck on the rebuild!

IMO- I would say to take the opportunity to replace the steel Raleigh parts with alloy parts- save a ton of weight... so to speak. My first build/project was a late 70s Raleigh Sprite.

1.55 Million = US$12,916

IMO - I am not going for weight, I am going for vintage. I have a road bike for weight.

Everybody has their own rules for their builds.

Just out of curiosity- if you have a 3 speed hub, why are you looking for a derailleur?

Also- it looks like the 'male' Mountie frame had a bent top tube- yours doesn't; are you sure it's a Mountie?

I dig it. 3x4 gearing should be really interesting -- I'm wondering how you'll route the cables. I've never understood the appeal of those shortie mudguards, though; i's hard to see what they might accomplish.

I used the same Sturmey Archer info. To rebuild my first hub. On YouTube there are a few videos by "Graham's Garage..." That are detailed.

It looks like he wants to run 3x5 or perhaps 3x6, with single-tooth progression.

As a UCLA undergrad I used to run a Cyclo 14-16-18-20 cluster block on a Sturmey AW hub, which gave me 10 nicely-spaced ratios and a redundant gear at each hub gear crossover point. I really liked it. In my case, cable routing was easy -- right side downtube lever for the derailleur and 3-speed trigger tucked brifter-style under the left brake lever, making double shifts a breeze.

You're right. It looks like the triangle has probably been cold-set to accommodate a wider rear axle.
