Help! What did I get myself into? 1989/90 Miele Lupa

I just bought this Miele Lupa from a guy on Craigslist that found it in the trash. I think it's either a 1989 or 1990. This is my first road bike and my first vintage bike. I've never even changed a tire before!

I fell in love with the neon salmon and chartreuse color scheme and decided it had to be mine. It needs some work but hey, it's going to be a learning experience!

One original Miele wheel and one non-matching Mavic wheel.

I was hoping this saddle was a Brooks when I saw the photos on Craigslist.

Vintage Time pedals and rusty chain.

What's this thing on the shifters for?

I decided to start with what I know and get the rust off the chrome forks. Any suggestions for next steps? I'd like to get it in rideable shape first and then upgrade/restore as I go.

Got yourself into a nice bike. 1050 is one of my favorite groups. The D-ring on the shifter switches between index and friction modes. New chain, new tires, check the brake pads, re-pack BB, hubs, and headset, maybe a cable or two and you're good to go.

Good looking bike! The Selle San Marco Regal is a nice saddle in it's own right, and the Mavic replacement wheel is also nice. Like Top said, repack the bearings, replace the chain and cables and ride it. There are so many videos on YouTube showing how to repack the bearings, and Park Tool's website has great instructions as well.

I'm sure you don't have the tools required if you haven't changed a tire before, so you may want to look in your area for a bike co-op that will have tools and guidance at your disposal.

Any recommendations for decently priced tires and chain?

Thanks for the ID on the saddle. It's pretty rusty underneath, do you think it could be saved?

Looks like you need a front brake. Excellent bike to learn on. Just look at it as one goal at a time, and don't get discouraged by looking at it all as one big project.

Panaracer Pasela for tires, 700x25.
I use KMC Z7 chains almost exclusively. Both are are very cost-effective.

I think that Miele made a lot of nice bikes in the 80s and this is one of them. top506 has it pretty much covered. Once it's all tuned up it should be a sweet bike to get into road riding with.

KMC makes a bunch of nice chains. I'd get one of the X-series chains (ex. X8.99 if you can find one), since they shift better than anything out there.

Also, I'm gonna go off-piste and recommend these for tires - they're a ***** to install, but once you get them on, they work a hell of a lot better than regular clinchers. see - 710232' 5 New Tufo C S33 Pro 24 Tubular Clincher Road Tire 24 mm Width Var Color | eBay

Nice score! Definitely what others said. Do one thing at a time - break it down into smaller tasks so it doesn't get overwhelming or frustrating. Take photos of anything you disassemble, or at least have a prescribed way in which you lay things out in order so you will know how they go back together again.

That saddle's crap. No good, ain't worth it.

PM me for instructions on how to send it my way so you can get a proper Brooks saddle.

Great score! From your post, I predict you'll be spending more time here, and welcome! Post more pics as you work on it, and feel free to ask questions. The nice thing about that bike is the paint looks in great condition, and the only parts that need replacement are consumables.

Here's why I think you're going to join the n+1 group:

"I fell in love...and decided it had to be mine."

Welcome to C&V, miele_lupa. You're gonna have a good time wrenching on that bike, learn tons, and have an awesome rider when you're done.
I sort of envy you.

Nice bike. When I worked in the Miele factory Jim introduced the "Lupa" which was named for his affectionate german shepherd. She was a good dog.

Saw that on the local CL: miele rare road issue ....stamp of authenticity

Not worth $2200 in mint, but not a bad deal, if you got him down a little from his asking price.

I saw that also but it's not my size and shipping it from where I am now is a total hassle. Where are you because I'm only 30 minutes away from Port Huron. If you need some help you can bring it to my house and I'll help you out. Well get that beast up and going in no time.

Yeah, I knew he was crazy with the $2200! I think someone was asking that on eBay for a higher end Miele. Can't find the auction now.

I got him down to $175. Not as great as some of the deals I've seen on here, but there are only so many neon salmon bikes out there!

$175 is a good deal. If you can do the work yourself, swapping out the chain, some new rubber and cables, clean and grease some bearings, maybe new brake pads and it's practically good as new. Or maybe some of those items can be delayed as you get your skills up. Not much riding time left where you are, get it rideable and go!

Thanks for the offer, but I'm in Grosse Pointe so it would be a bit of a trek.
