The world is your parts bin?

It's getting that way, and has been for a while, I suppose.
For me, it's either that or buy a new bike and ride it. (OK, I'm good with that, too).

Go ahead, list a bike that came from "all over."

Nice build. Someday we'll have to get our two 650b Specials together, so they can make little junior Hodsworth 550A bikelets.

I'm with you - the best I can do is quote this from one of my build thread shout-outs:

"Okay, to close out this thread, I have a lot of people to thank

Without your assistance, parts and troubleshooting skillz this build might not have been possible:

Parts:

RogerM:
Chorus RD, supplied for free, and the loan of a first-generation set of Ergopower levers so that I could learn the internal secrets!
Shnibop: Flawless Chorus brake calipers, received in trade for some minor drillium work.
Robbie Tunes: Downtube cable stop adjusters in perfect condition - again supplied free!
Stausty: Ergo lever spare shift triggers, supplied free!
champion city: Record Titanium seatpost for a very nice price and in superb condition.
Gomango: NOS Ergo cable set with all the trimmings in part-trade.
Rootboy: Spare Ergo brake cable housings with ferrules and old logos - free!

And I also thank those that contributed to the coffers so that I was able to buy the parts I sourced from Ebay or other members:

Shnibop: Now the happy owner of a perforated black Flite saddle and a set of Super Record brake calipers.
Gomango: Proud owner of a shiny, near-new Super Record one-bolt fluted seatpost.
Joe Barker: Happy camper with his Super Record crankset.

Cost analysis:

This was a pretty cheap build, considering some of the stuff I got for free (out of the goodness of members' hearts and Bike-Karma I had saved up). A breakdown:

Headset: $65
Crankset: $61
Vuelta chainring: $10
BB: $45
Cableset: $40
Ergopower levers: $100 (adjusted)
Upgraded brake pads: $12
Tires: $102
Seatpost: $80
LBS labor: $47.27

Total: $522.27

Of course, this does not include the returns on the parts I sold, but let's just say that in the end, it basically cost a little less than zero to make the transformation

Advice/Information:

I went back into my "Started Threads" and realized I made the decision to convert this from old to new on 20 November (my divorce was finalized just 11 days before, so perhaps unconsciously I wanted to solidify my moving on in a bike-related way). From the start, of course, I had questions. Lots of them. Thanks to those who were right there from the start to answer them

thirdgenbird: Ergopower expert extraordinaire!
Robbie Tunes: Drivetrain, gearing, Ergopower setup and BB advice from day one!
20grit: More Ergopower expertise, plus provided the video which served to get me started on tackling the disassembly!
Gomango: Across the board experience in all areas - and the go-to guy for the "second opinion"!
Rootboy: Lots of offline suggestions and support - when I needed to know I was doing the right thing...
Italuminum/rat fink: Chain tension/length suggestions and expertise.
Mr Ess: X9SL chain suggestion.
Michael Angelo/Poprad: Tag-teamed to inform me the steel coil cable would not be advisable!

Troubleshooters:

thirdgenbird:
A guy who knows his Ergopower!

And we can't forget those who either said prayers for snow or simply told me to s**t or get off the pot

4Rings6Stars
MPC Biker

And, last but certainly not least:

Mapleleafs-13: For making the call for drillium Without that suggestion pretty much from day one, this build would've been less interesting and challenging.

For those of you seeing this thread for the first time, or are new to Bike Forums, I invite you to peruse the names above once again: these people make this worldwide community the best. The wealth of knowledge on here humbles me, and my sincere thanks go out to all of you who contributed to this fantastic project!"

***Btw, Robbie - you neglected to ID mapleleafs-13's contribution as coming from the Great White North Note that you made a contribution to this particular bike used as my example!

Adding a picture for posterity - and 'cause someone asked for pics:

Noted and fixed! Thanks for keeping it where it needs to be, DD. Every time I see an orange bike.....

I'm not one for corporate wordsmiths, but "synergy" does come to mind.

One wonders how many bikes have been built, and ridden, and really, really enjoyed, because of the enthusiasm, benevolence, and just plain expertise available here on BF C&V? I can't say that I have a single bike that doesn't have some influence, contribution (be it in encouragement, advice, or bike part) or motivation supplied by people on Bike Forums C&V. In fact, the bikes I've flipped, built and sold without some kind of C&V influence actually seemed different, not even worth mentioning. Any time I've felt like simply getting rid of the mess and getting a new bike, or no bike, something on C&V snaps me back. 5 minutes, for example, spent with cehowardGS will make your month.

Then again, maybe I drink too much.

I couldn't have put it more succinctly than that - I think you're onto something

I love the depth here, across the board. I can't believe I was thinking of punching out not one month ago!

Terrific thread! Surely its the awesome creative builds, parts trading and sourcing. But also the camaraderie and learning from others. The build process is what puts soul into a bike.

Odd, weird, neat??.... while putting together a bike, I'll often think about where a part came from and or re-purposing it. Could be new or used. I know to be losing it by getting excited over acquiring someone's garbage looking 50's era brake cable housings- LOL.

Thanks all for bringing the fun!

Have to admit it, but without eBay, all my bikes will be close to bare frames.....but then without the frames, 99% of which were bought from BF C&V forum members, I would not have bikes, so without BF C&V forum members, I would not even have most of my C&V stable!
Thanks very much guys!!

@rhm, that Holdsworth is outstanding. It looks like one of those "if you could have only one" bikes. How do you like it?

Oh, it's good. Very good. Brakes are good. Shifts well. Fits perfectly. You're right, it is versatile enough for just about any riding. It was fine on a multi-day tour fully loaded around hilly New York State, and it has been fine on brevets. Really can't complain about anything! But nor is there any magic to the ride, regardless whether heavily loaded or not. It doesn't fly, hover, plane, whatever. It's just a bike.

I forgot to mention one thing. When I have spare parts, I don't think "what are they worth?" any more.
I simply wonder who on BF C&V might need them. That's an internal thing I'm not sure I always had.

+1
This is the spirit behind the C&V enthusiast. Actually quite infectious and a few LBS I know are the same way regarding old parts. I drop them off stuff and don't really give a hoot, who or what they do with it. But I do know they have catch bins and they allow me to have at it. I take only what I could use. Zilch for reselling or profiteering.

Matter of fact, after a few more projects to wrap up, I'll have a free for all parts grab. Everyone here has been super and its the very least I could do in return. Cheer's!
