cartridge BB spindle length for Stronglight 49D double
Anyone have a 49D with double chainrings mounted on a modern JIS cartridge bottom bracket? 115mm, 118mm, or something else? Any spacers under the BB?
My UO-8 needs a new BB, the Stronglight cups are badly grooved and unbearably noisy even with brand new grade 25 bearing balls and lots of grease.
I'll most likely use IRD w/ French cups, and don't want to order one based on vague assumptions. The original Stronglight spindle I have is 120mm.
Before anyone says it, no, I do not want new cups and loose balls.
Thanks

I think 115mm JIS should work. Most of the original Stronglight double spindles I've used were 118mm. So 115mm with the crank arm sitting a bit farther off because of the JIS spindle should be okay.

I recently bought and installed a Shimano UN55 cartridge BB and was surprised to find that the BB axle spacing, unlike the original BB and most older square BB's, was symmetrical, i.e., when the UN55 was installed in the frame, the same length of axle extended out the drive side as the non-drive side. It required a 3mm home-shop-made spacer to get chain ring clearance.

I used 113mm Shimano UN72, forced into the Swiss threads. Chainring clearance is adequate, but shifting to the small ring can be sluggish.
Go with the 115, add a 1 or 2mm spacer only if you need it. The test-fit is very quick using a cartridge.
