IMLE (in my limited experience) you have to be careful with a swap like this. Most likely your current crank and spindle t are not JIS so you will have an interface issue that you need to decide if you are comfortable with. Also the spindle is most likely asymmetrical so you might end up with different clearances and may need a different spindle length to get a good chainline.

This is great; thanks. I have an old Stronglight 99 that I want to turn into a compact double (47-32); this takes care of the problem.

Lass year, when I was looking to replace the rings on my worn BIS crank, I swear they were all over the place- just not the drilled BIS rings... so I wasn't interested... now I look and I see them pretty much nowhere. Maybe I was looking for the wrong ones,

I think "Apex" was used to indicate a forged crank, while "Custom" was used to indicate a cast (aka "melt forged") crank, regardless of the BCD used. There was an 86mm BCD "Custom" crank as well.
I knew the "Maxy" was produced in different BCDs, I thought "Apex" was a model... now that you mention it- that sounds very plausible- as the Custom crank sets I can recall weren't on the high end bikes- despite the implication of the word "custom."

And speaking of cranks- I'm hoping to get to the VSP/Trek 720 tonight when I get home!

So with my 6 speed freewheel and rear mech, could I use a (e.g.) 9/10 speed double chainset if I was to get a narrower 9/10 speed chain?
