Usually bike store swap meets are lame

Usually slightly out of date bikes and components and even worse, usually charge tax.
Was at one on Saturday and there were some great classics. There was a brand new looking white or cream Raleigh 3 speed, dyno hub, headlight, complete with pump with the Raleigh crest on it. No ribs on the rear hub so pre 72. Didn't get a good look cause it was just being walked out.
A Schwinn Madison single speed, too small for me, don't see many decent Schwinns round here.
A Lemond Poprad in my size. Been keeping my eye open for one and it was $50 less than the bottom line Miele beside it.
Bought it and even better no tax. Appears to be a 2004, Reynolds 853.
But then started looking at a Bob Jackson. It was too small but so nice - and was just $100 more than the bottom line Miele.
Unfortunately the owner must have decided to go index - Shimano 600 shifters and rear derailleur. Tubular tires.
Couldn't walk away and leave it there. 2 inches too small for me so not sure what I'm going to do with it - put a long seatpost in it and ride it a bit of course. Looking around the Internet at serial numbers it appears to likely be a 1976. Very odd in that it has Columbus decals - from what I see the Columbus decal is from 1972 to 1974. Every reference I see to a Bob Jackson has Reynolds.

Blew the bike budget for a while, went there hoping to pick up a rear wheel or some bits and pieces.

Damn, that BJ is smokin' hot! Of course I love the drilling/milling, but that black/gold paintwork just does the trick. Awesome score.

The Lemond? Pretty cool.
But the Bob Jackson? WHOA. That's a seriously good-looking bike!

I would find a way to make that Bob Jackson work even if it involved surgery. Seriously awesome. Love the cranks!

I had exactly the same thought - what part of my leg could I do without - between the Bob Jackson, the gorgeous Falcon and a Lemond Zurich, almost all my recent buys are too small.

OK, I am going to have to jump on the Bob Jackson pile. Excellent score, even if the crankset milling looks slightly scary.

Have you written to BJ to ask about the tubing?

Oh yeah, the other bikes are kind of cool too.

I have had two Bob Jackson's. First one was a little too small, and it took me over a year of hard riding before I came to terms with the fact. I have held onto the 2nd, and can't imagine ever parting with it.

Excellent scores. Try riding the Jackson, but be honest with yourself about it. If it turns out to be too small, perhaps hang onto it as a guest bike, or pass it on and recoup everything you spent at the swap.
