C&V Souvenirs
My collection of bicycling souvenirs is a lot bigger than the space I have to display them. I thought I would post a few here, and encourage others. I'm not interested in the t-shirt from a race ten years ago. What do you have that is really old and meaningful?
Forty years ago I went to a sporting goods store to buy two stopwatches. I expected to get the old mechanical round type, but the clerk showed me these, the latest digital technology, times to 100ths of a second.
"I'll take two."
I wanted them to time this new goof my friends and I had come up with, racing against the clock on our old cruisers, down a long, steep hill on a rutted, eroded fire road. After spending a lot of money for these clocks, I had to justify the purchase by putting on a lot of races. Downhill took over my life and the lives of my friends.
I taped beer bottle caps over the reset buttons on both watches to prevent accidental shutdowns. The last two races that I put on, in 1983 and 1984 were the first NORBA sanctioned downhills.

Heh. I can't follow that act.
Closest I have is a ca. 1973 plastic fake Unicanitor saddle I got on my my first 10-speed bike, a Winchester, my 13th birthday present from my grandmother. In the pic, note the edge of the left skirt that has cracked apart and fallen away on the road somewhere over the years. Saddle has rusty rails, somewhat bent from 33 years of use and abuse by a rider who went from 80 lbs to 200 lbs over its lifespan. This 'souvenir' is still in occasional use, its on the velo cheapo bike I keep at my in-laws place and ride five or six times a year

I wouldn't have called this a souvenir, but now that you mention it, maybe! It is a left over from an bike purchase in 1968/9 of a Peugeot UO-8. I think that is what it was. Didn't know much back then, it just looked "racy". I rode the bearings off that bike. Had two sets of wheels for it, clincher and sew-up (tubulars for you young'uns). Wish I had taken good care of it and still had it.

I had a t-shirt from the '84 Olympics in LA.
When it was beyond worn out, I couldn't give it up.
Speed Thrills PERIOD.

Postcards from '84. Not sure if there was a cycling one - Greg had yet to win a TdF.

1986 Irish Hills Tour, my first century. I still have the bike, and rode it in the 2011 tour, but they no longer give out patches.

I am retired, but work 1 day per week at the LBS. When I came in this morning, Rory (the young mechanic who works next to me) was cleaning up the workspace. It seems that they were quite busy on Saturday, and had left everything in a mess at the end of the day. He told me that he had a few take-off items for me -namely Mafac Racer brake pads and Sugino wingnuts. Long story short, he could only find two of the Racer pads and one of the wingnuts. I was happy to get them anyway, and he is going to check the junk drawers to see if they ended up there.
