Dick Power from Queens with an interesting rear end

I just came across this Queens NY made 1963 Dick Power bicycle. It uses 4 seat stays to improve the rear end stiffness of this bike which was built for a tall rider. Have you seen this method before or is it unique to this bicycle?

It does not look overly tall, maybe a 58 or 59cm. That guy looks like his legs were huge.

Sadly, any mention of that builder puts a part of my mind back into 8th grade.

Fortunately, any bike that would need extra reinforcing would be too large for me. It is evidently a viable solution, and possibly the best one known at the time, but it wouldn't be a selling point for me. That said, I can imagine the likely original set-up with the seat clamp forward of the seat tube.

I would so love to either get a Dick Power bike or get some Dick Power decals for an existing frame.

A very interesting bike, but i see no evidence that it was a successful design. The guy for whom it was built, to ride in the Olympic trials, rode a different bike for that event. This bike, and even its wheels, 53 years later, is in great condition. Was it ever ridden? Doesn't look that way. Not a sign of a great riding bike!

Ha! Yes. I couldn't resist the joke, and the cool graphics (which I faked) but started feeling bad about the deception. After I had the frame powder coated I put the correct Falcon decals on it.

There is a museum in Brooklyn called the City Reliquary, and the guy who runs it is a bike guy. A couple of years ago, he had a whole exhibit on Dick Power. Wasn't Power also a racer?

Oh what the ads must have been like;

Our new Dick Power in the rear end bike will leave all those other short stays envious. You will really appreciate the stiffness of our long Dick Power top tube stays, the stiffest you or she will ever ride. Get Dick Power today at your local LBS and all others riders will come up short!

Sometime during the nineties, our then prime minister Wim Kok and the then CEO of our national postal and telecom services provider, Wim Dik traveled to London together for business. That must have been fun.

A Tony Merkins stem, and there is one on ebay now, would compliment the bike well.
