No droll trolls today, just a progress report. Some good news, some not so good. Received brakes, stem, handlebar, and BB in the mail today. It's starting to come together. I need to decide cable housing color. I'd considered red but yellow would pull in the name on the DT. Suggestions?

Unfortunately it looks like my gearing won't work. Getting a BB to work is always the hardest part for me when I'm not using parts exactly as prescribed by the manufacturers. As I feared (or I should say expected), my 165mm Sugino RT triple will simply not work unless I can find a spindle at least 10mm longer on the right. Right now I have a nice 114mm 70-SSG spindle. A newer 165mm Sugino double works well but the chainrings are 48-36. With a 26T large sprocket that gives me the same low gears that came on my UO-8 when it was new! I can live with it, sort of, but dang this area can be hilly. Must look for options. I wasn't totally sold on the triple idea anyway.

Also I'm not thrilled with the appearance of the tri-color gruppo. It's pretty but it doesn't match the overall styling. I'll keep looking for a drive train solution to see how DT indexing works, but if I don't like it the whole shebang will likely be replaced.

Jim, while drolling about and pondering your blue Tommasini, I believe yellow cable housing would look really nice. This would mean you might need to use yellow bar tape and possibly a yellow saddle. Then there are yellow sidewall tires to consider, and Continental yellow valve stem covers, and yellow cable donuts, and yellow bar end plugs, and yellow toe straps, and....

At least it would help you be seen on the streets of suburban Boston where traffic can be wicked!

Jim,
I went with yellow cable housings for the brakes on my Medici, as well as yellow Velox Guidoline(sp?) cloth tape. It turned out pretty nice. The blue and yellow together will be sharp, and I remember seeing someone's recent bike build in this forum, with a yellow saddle and other details, not to bad, IMHO.

Have you looked into a Campagnolo triple spindle? I've seen a few on eBay while hunting up stuff for my Tommie here lately. Not sure if one would be compatible with your crankset, they are standard Campa square taper. Even seen a few of the various NR and other triple cranksets listed. Just a random thought.

Bill

You mean like this?

I was thinkin' of red just to make it different. The darker blue of the Tommasini could handle it, maybe, though I'm not convinced.

I just looked at triple spindles on the bay. I'd have to spend a chunk, maybe still not get something that fits without I do some mayshurin' first.

I'd stick with yellow tape, to match the logo colour.

Agreed.

I just posted a few pics of today's progress in the Tommasini Lounge. Yellow bar tape is on the way.

Upon digging through the bins I discovered a bunch of BB pieces I thought I remembered from when I built up the tandem. Tucked away were two longish spindles with what appear to be appropriate bearing spacing, one decidedly asymmetric. I might be able to set up the triple after all.
