Opinions on substitute for Campy bottom bracket

I'm very slowly plugging away on a build for my new to me Basso Gap. I'm planning on a 7 speed Chorus/Athena group for it. I have a 1993 Veloce crankset that I have rehabbed to a shiny finish to make it look at a glance like an Athena crank. This AM I sifted through my parts stash to find that I don't have the appropriate 111 mm spindled BB for this crank.I do have a pre-CPSC 113 mm Record and a post CPSC 115.5 mm Record BB. I'd like to use one of these. The spindles on the C-Record style cranks are symmetric whereas these BB's are asymmetric. Here is my math worksheet and what I see as my options:

Veloce BB symmetric 55.5 mm midline to spindle end
Pre-CPSC Record 55 mm midline to NDS end and 58 mm midline to DS end
Post CPSC Record 56 mm midline to NDS end and 59.5 midline to DS end.

#1 - Flip the post CPSC Record for near exact match and live with a little extra q-factor on NDS.
#2 - Flip the pre CPSC Record for near exact match, might shave the chain stay and FD a little closer.
#3 - Use the pre-CPSC Record as God and Tullio intended and deal with possible hit to the chainline, etc.

I don't think the taper changed on the Veloce for another year or two, so shouldn't be an issue. I know spacers are an option but don't want to put my tiny brain through those gymnastics.

My opinion is for you to purchase a Phil Wood Bottom Bracket.

Well let's just say my target spend on this pretty far south of the $100+ for a Phil, zero being the ideal number.

Spaghetti Legs,

Say........ are you riding a C & V bike at Thunder Ridge this year? Maybe that is what this build is for? There are some 112mm spindles from various mfgrs on the bay for around $20 bucks. Some Campy in the size you are looking for but cost more. Also another one I will PM you about.

Since you are a taller person, what size do you think that Orange/pinkish Univega listed on the Charlottesville CL and BF Ebay/CL finds is? I will be up in that area next weekend. I could probably get it for around $50, but it looks to be at least a 58cm. Too big for me. Now about that PM.

My first though is also get a Phil.

My second is if you have the parts in hand that you also have the answers in hand. You need to trial fit the various options. Really why would you need to ask if you have the parts already... or am I missing something? Andy.

Can you use the 113 mm one with a spacer on the NDS to make it symmetric? Then it's only 1 extra mm on each side.

I'm with Andrew on this one. Try them. Sometimes a trial fit will surprise you because it only takes a little bit of difference in a taper to make a couple of mm change in chainline.

Thanks all,

Yes I have the parts, in fact I have about a dozen bottom brackets laying around but none the perfect match for this crank. I had planned on trying option #1, just curious what the peanut gallery thought and if someone would come up with some disastrous reason why I shouldn't attempt it. I'm also not completely averse to buying the right BB, just somewhat reluctant when I have all these others sitting around.

Hey Pat,

This one will most likely not do the SOTR. I want to use CV and if I'm in shape it will likely be the Merckx Century. If I'm not in shape it will be the fancy pants modern Colnago.

That Univega looks about a 56 to me. Check out the map though, it's in the mountains near Culpeper and will take you about an hour + to get there from Cville. Drop a line to this guy.

He selling a Trek OCLVand at one point he mentioned "other bikes" that he would sell all together for cheap. I asked for details and he was vague and I didn't have time to go take a look last time I was up there.

I go to Fredericksburg about once a week and Bealeton about once a month for business. Bealeton is about 40 miles from the Univega location. I don't need another bike, but that bike might need rescuing. It looks like it has seen time outside. Might be too far gone. Still, it could be an easy purchase. Maybe I will send a measurement request.

As for the SOTR bike, last year I built a crankset just for that ride. It goes on all of my bikes except for the LeJeune. I just put it on, change the cluster in back and go.

I'm curious, what crank did you use it with? New Campy BB's use ISO taper vs the older ones with the proprietary Campy taper.
