24" Sky Blue 1967 Schwinn Super Sport

It was waiting for me in a box when I got home tonight. Pretty interesting specimen. I really like the 27 x 1-1/8" tires. Anyone recognize?

They have what appears to be a Michelin man on them, are labelled "Select", and seem like they may also be from 1967

I don't see a serial number on the frame, but 1967 seems right based on seller's description and the 1967 Schwinn Catalog, which says it's their finest riding bike, next to the Paramount.

Edit: There's a number on the left dropout K7105.

Is the first bike I own to predate its owner.

I like the KKT toe clips and Schwinn ̶A̶p̶p̶r̶o̶v̶e̶d̶ Sprint toe straps, the Brooks B15 saddle isn't in bad shape, and the chromed fork is pretty cool.

This might be the first year the SS had Twin-Stiks? The AVA stem seems okay, but I've read they can snap and are sometimes known as the stem of death. Came with an orange safety flag and attached reflector.

Has Weinmann rims, should these have also been Sprint?

Has Sprint derailleurs and Sprint is marked on crankset. Was Sprint made by Huret?

Weinmann Vainqueur (610 & 750) 999 brakes.

Here's a similar, older model,

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...per-sport.html

Will need a good cleaning, overhaul, and wheel truing, and maybe I'll get rid of the foam handlebar padding, but will probably try to keep the components as found.

The angle of the kick stand seems different. It lands more to the left than normal, and appears a bit longer than those on later models.

You can see the serial number behind the Sprint skewer in the picture of the LH dropout you posted above. It starts with K7xxxxx which indicates a dropout stamped in October 1967.

I like the KKT toe clips and Schwinn Approved toe straps, the Brooks B15 saddle isn't in bad shape, and the chromed fork is pretty cool.
Note those are Schwinn SPRINT toe straps, which are correct for that era (pre-Schwinn Approved). The original toe clips would have also been Sprint branded.

1967 was the first year for Twin-Stik shifters as well as the built-in kickstand on the SS. It was also the only year that the chainguard came from the factory on the Sprint chainrings.

Has Weinmann rims, should these have also been Sprint?
Weinmann rims and Sprint hubs were original on the SS that year.

Has Sprint derailleurs and Sprint is marked on crankset. Was Sprint made by Huret?
Sprint was a Schwinn trademarked brand. Many different companies made Sprint branded parts for Schwinn, for example the derailleurs were from Huret, chainrings from Nervar (a brand of Etalblissements Peyrard) and the Hubs and freewheels were from Atom/Maillard.

The angle of the kick stand seems different. It lands more to the left than normal, and appears a bit longer than those on later models.
That is true, good observation! The 1970 and earlier Schwinn built-in kickstands deployed at a greater angle from vertical than '71 and later models, When people would sit on bikes with the older style cam/kickstand deployed it could put excessive rotational force on the cam in the frame tube housing, rounding out the frame tube in some cases.

I love the older Super Sports with a chrome fork. I can't wait to see it all cleaned up.

Thanks for the info! The straps do appear to say Sprint, they're in good shape and feel high quality ... the clips are KKT. I can't tell if the hubs are Sprint, but they kind of look like Normandy, say Schwinn Approved & Made in France. The pedals are made in France, seem to be Atom, and they have Atom reflectors.

Are you saying it's the only year to have Sprint / Nervar chain rings, wondering why you relate it to the chainguard?

Good to know. Do you know which removal tool an Atom/Maillard freewheel needs?

There was a transition from Sprint to Schwinn Approved branding on the hubs at that time and that is a very late '67 so I believe the hubs would be original. KKT toe clips are much later replacements, as are the pedal reflectors. In fact pedal reflectors weren't factory installed until '72, and if the reflector is embossed TPP-22 as I suspect then it was from 1976 or later. The pedals however do appear to be the correct original early Atom 440 model. Another strange component is the type of Sprint rear derailleur used, with a riveted badge and solid steel pulleys, which I believe was used only in '64. I suspect the original Sprint derailleur (with a stick-on badge and smooth plastic rimmed pulleys) has been replaced by an older version.

Sprint chainrings were used on the SS (and Continental and Varsity) from 1964 through 1967 however '67 was the one and only year they came with the chainguard.

That would be the Park FR-4: FR-4 Freewheel Remover | Park Tool

Interesting ... Yep the reflectors are TPP-22. I believe I read these pulleys don't shift as well as toothed or may wear out ... they seem okay (both top & bottom are toothless), they do have very small indentations (baby/micro teeth) around the circumference.

Ah now that makes sense.

That's a cool bike to be waiting for you when coming home. Another nod to pics when you get it cleaned up!

67 schwinn w/sprint parts

Hey
i have a 67 schwinn with all sprint components (wheels, derailers, handle bar, etc.). It was painted and i cant identify what model it is as there is no stickers. i am restoring the bike and wonder if anybody knows what model it is? i believe it is either a ss, continetal, or varsity... any ideas?

You're replying to an old thread. I'd recommend you build up enough posts so you can start your own thread and post pictures. A serial number search will tell you the year it was built but photos will tell Schwinn aficionados exactly what model you have.
