1951 0r 53 CCM three speed (photos)
First attempt at photos, so be patient...
Sending these both to add to the growing CCM knowledge base, and to ask for any insight into this bike.
It's nearly as found, except for the headlight and silly handlebar-mounted buzzer horn thing, a NOS period piece which suits the bike. Also added blue handgrips, to replace the rotten originals, which were white coke bottle type. Looking for replacements... The bars, if you can't tell, are very long, wide and swept-back.
It's got a three speed SA hub, with drum brake. Dated 1951. Shifter is bar mounted. I re-covered the metal-panned seat with deer hide, but otherwise original. Serial number is 51179E, which suggests 1953?
Tires are 28" canadian, chain guard may have had an arrow or similar design, but it's worn away.
Anyway, there you go. It weighs just over 40 pounds, handles like a combine, and is a total blast to ride.

Now thats a beauty! Question, does the disc brake hub act as a coaster brake to, if you back pedal will it engage? It has a coaster brake arm so I was just wondering, if it indeed does that is totally sweet being a 3 speed! Wish I could find something like that!
Nice touch with the headlight, dont really like the buzzer thing though as its plastic thus tacky looking!
Love the handlebars, my 28" heavy beast built by "Sunshine" has huge ones just like that, best handlebars ever!

You have a very nice bike there. Please don't repaint it. It is hard to find original paint CCM bikes. The rear hub is a drum brake that is used with a brake lever. It is not a coaster brake. I believe CCM bikes only came with a a CCM rear hub and the Sturmey was a dealer installed option, maybe that is why the hub is 51 and bike is 53. The dealer maybe had the hub is stock from 1951. Have fun with it.

Won't be repainting it, or doing anything with the original patina, other than rust removal.
Indeed, the brake is not a coaster, and the bit that makes it look like one is a brace to stop the drum from spinning on its axis. It's a hand brake, and the pedals do turn backwards.
My nephew's 55 CCM Collegiate also has a SA hub (not drum), so it must have been a fairly common upgrade.
Question: what clips were used to secure cables on CCMs? This one had what looked like cloth tape holding the brake cable to the frame.
As a side note, the buzzer thing is all metal, expect for the plastic red window where the light comes on when you press the button. It's pure cheese, but a friend gave it to me as a gift, and I've been dying to annoy sleepy car drivers with it. Works better than a bell, anyway.
