may or may not be the right place-velo-style bag
I love the look of the Velo Orange bag, the Carradice, and Gilles Berthoud bags. I know that they're worth the money, but I don't have it. does anyone make a cheaper, similarly styled bag? just something somewhat traditionally styled in a seat bag. Thanks for any suggestions, I just want to try one out.

Frost River is another option: https://www.frostriver.net/cart/index...06aef9b0c93966.
Not exactly giving stuff away, but a bit less pricey than Carradice or Berthoud. I'm hoping to happen on the perfect duck canvas bag at a thrift store that I can retrofit into a handlebar bag in some way.

I just stumbled upon a total idea. now, they're not waterproof, or that nice, but your local army navy store sells bags (ammo puoches, medic bags) of canvas for ~12 bucks. My wife had one in our closet. It's a little big, so I am going to shop around, but it's a starting point.

Seller bdub410 on ebay had some bags that look like Brooks bags. I bought a few and they are very nice. They are a vinyl type but very good quality from what I can see. I have a real Brooks and a Carradice but if I put a Brooks tag on these you wouldn't know the difference. I am not sure if he has more. Those Frost Rive bags are very nice.
