G.P. seatpost? (please help identify)
Someone sold me a seatpost that he "thought" was a Gipiemme seatpost.
Arrives this in the mail today... not Gipiemme, but the initials "G.P." in a handwritten font (similar to what I redid in photoshop... my camera is not good) are written on the back of the post, the only other words are "27,2" on the side of the post and "BREV" at the front but if there was anything written at the bottom of the post, where it gets inserted in the seat tube, it was erased by many insertions.
Isn't there a (British?) "G.P." who used to make stems, etc? Any info would be great, it's quite hard to make a search on google or this forum for "GP" or "G.P."... Thanks! :)

I think you're thinking of GB, but Brev usually indicates an Italian item, and I don't think they ever made micro adjust seatposts.

I can't enlarge the thumbnail pics, but what you describe IS an older Gipiemme, that's how they used to be marked, they are the initials of the founder of Gipiemme. Search this forum for "GS" seatpost, as that was what somebody (including me) thought the initials were.

I was a long-time proponent of this being a product of GPM based on this convincing argument culled from the CR archives:
"...Giovanni Papillardo de Milano. Before he got the idea to call his
company GPM (Gipiemme)."
I've repeated it several times (so...it must be true )
However, I can't avoid a counter point from one of the much more knowledgable CR folks who says these were sold as "San Marco" seat posts and have no indication (GPM, Gian Robert, or anybody else) as to who actually made them.
I think the jury's still out on this.
There IS such a thing as a Gian Robert (no "s") seat post, and a pic of one in the CR main site under Italian components. They were much more known for the poorly regarded (but very light) RDs and FDs, plus a few cranksets (some nice looking sets) and just one style seat post (that I've seen) which is different than this "GP/GS/GR" post. It might be an odd-ball but every single Gian Robert product (down to the smallest shifter band, even on the RD cage) always has the full name spelled out, in block capital letters, often in an oval...never seen it abbreviated as G.R. or GR and never seen it in script.
But I haven't seen everything, yet.
Edit: Guess I've seen everything, cause right there in Velobase is the only Gian Robert product that has the (full) name in an italic font...on a pair of shift levers. But note that if you isolate the initial G and R they look nothing like the mystery seat post letters. And Gian Robert uses the word "patent" rather than "Brev." on the many articles that claim to be "patented".

Here's closes up on an NOS one. I need to sell it. It's 25.4, I'll be posting it in the "For sale Section" soon.

well speaking of "zombie threads" this one is back with us from 2012...but first time for that smooth shaft version of a "G.S." so a worthwhile update. BTW tho well established that these were sold by saddle makers Selle San Marco I wonder who actually made them? I'd be surprised if a saddle company had forging and milling equipment, let alone the expertise with alloy. I suppose there's an outside chance that the contractor MIGHT be somebody like Gipiemme
