Loose Dust Cap

This may be for the mechanics forum but I'll start here. I was riding my fixie and was slowing down quickly when I felt the rear cog slip. I thought, no big deal, the lock ring is loose and needs tightening. I check the hub and the non-drive side dust cap is skewed but still in the shell and there was of course play in the hub.

I walked it home, replaced the bearings, tapped the dust cap into place and tightened the lock ring. Anything else I can do? Will the dust cap come loose again?

If it matters, the hubs are Racelite high flange hubs. Age is unknown, Sammyboy may know if he reads this.

So an axle cone hadn't loosened up but a dust cap had? If so, that's pretty odd and still wouldn't cause any play given that the cones sit against the bearings. Dust caps should just keep dust out. Any chance you have too small a size bearings in there or a damaged cone?

I don't think so. The cones look good and the bearings are a standard 1/4". Could the loose lock ring and slipping cog do any of this?

perhaps the play in the hub was great enough for the cone to knock the dustcap out of it's position ?

Your issue is with the cones and locknuts (both sides, maybe), and not the dustcap.

Some hubs do have one-piece dust cap and cone units, but those are usually pretty low end. Racelite high flange likely wouldn't have that, but I don't know for sure.
