bar end shifter recommedation

I still have a wild hair about using bar end shifters on the Volare. I know the bike didn't come with them but since I don't have the stock fork and am using some bits other than the original Dura ace I though what the heck. Any recommendations on what I should be looking for other than Shimano? Will Suntour work or would Campy work? I know nothing about bar ends which is probably why I'm considering using them

any friction bar end shifter will work. My personal like, given no restoration constraints, would be the suntour power shifters. I had 'em on a sweet supercourse and still remember them fondly. They don't cost nearly as much as good campy's, either (you can buy a lotta campy bar ends that aren't all there, but they will still work, and so the seller probably doesn't even realize that he's screwin' the buyer).

Suntour made the best ones.

There is the one seller on e-bay in Mexico that has, what seems to be, and unending supply of NOS Suntour units. The seller is fausto57. I bought a set from him earlier in the year and they do indeed seem to be new and in perfect shape.

"Schwinn approved" bar ends were made by Sun Tour and were good enough to have been original equipment on my 1974 Paramount. The rest of the bike is full Campy. Roger

PM me...........I've got Silvers, Shimano and Campy. If you wanted Suntour I have them too but they would have to be mounted on the Silver shifter pods. Maybe a trade for those Suntour shifters I hooked you up with?

If you like your shifters, you can try those rivendell pods. Bikedued has used a set and likes them.

I prefer Simplex Retrofrictions to any other friction shifter. They never made a Simplex Retrofriction bar end shifter, so I made my own. They're replacing Suntour Barcons, which I never really liked, even though they're better than the others. The Simplexes have a clutch. They don't click.

So if I have the shifter pods I can use the levers from a downtube or stem mount shifter setup? Is that what you are saying?

I just did my Trek 560 with the rivendell pods and 7 speed index shifters from Nashbar. They look nice and can be used in friction mode if you want friction, or don't have an indexed RD. I like the indexed on the 560. It's scary enough trying to avoid the moronic drivers here, the indexing means one less thing to worry about. Suntour Barcons are okay, but I find them to be a little vague on my Voyageur. Seems like the levers are too stubby or something. Maybe I just haven't ridden with them long enough to get used to them.,,,,BD

Sorry the first pic is just showing off the new drillium addition....

I'll have to add them to my "holy grail" list. Vintage T.A. pedals were at the top of that list until last night, when I scored a set.

I have a set of indexed Campy shifters that are brand new, but of course you'd have to use all the other proper Campy parts for them to work right. (which is why I'm not using them) I just swapped out some Suntour barcons for some Cyclone dt shifters on my Univega. So far so good.
