Thanks, guys. It was a fun ride.

Went for a birthday ride on the 5th. Knew this birthday was going to be tough, and ended up calling in and playing hookie. Treated myself to a chilly ride on one of the local rail/trails. Took the non vintage cheap fatty so I could play in the snow.

Low budget Gravity I picked up from a friend. Came with the rack, another set of wheels, and two sets of tires.

Sorry no pictures.

I rode to my mother's place (my childhood home) to clean it out, 5.5 miles each way. Worked on it for a couple of hours. By the time I headed home, it had snowed, and there was a thin layer of snow in some places on my route back. It was dark 33ºF and a bit damp. I didn't fall or get cold, so it was a good ride. First ride in a few days, so that was good, too.

Had a frozen ride on the Alex Singer, maybe the last for a while as once the salt comes out, the Singers rest.

Thank you all for the great photos and reports. I'm afraid I haven't been doing my share recently, so I will attempt to make some amends here.

Point Reyes Station, CA is not the Azur Coast but it is coastal and a tourist destination. It's also the far point of one of my favorite loops in this area, 31 miles round trip from home. The Rock Lobster is my bike of choice for rides in wet weather and rides that include some off-pavement travel.

I'm trying out a new saddle and a new seat pack. I'm happy with both. The saddle is the Selle San Marco Regale in the "wide" size, an update on the old "Regal," bit flatter and available in two widths. For my wide sit bones it is very comfortable. The pack is an item borrowed from the adventure touring side of our sport. It's the "Pika" made by Revelate. In this picture it is loaded with two spare tubes, tire irons, miscellaneous small wrenches, a medium sized camera in its padded case (Sony nex-6) and a rain jacket. While riding it was easy to forget that it was even there: I think it's going to take me a while to get used to the look but it's exceptionally useful and waterproof too.

Poking around the nooks and crannies of this town is always rewarding.

Another attraction of the Point Reyes Station loop is a small selection of single-track alternate routes. This one is within the Point Reyes National Seashore.

Great pics Brent! That Rock Lobster is a real stunner. Revelate makes great bags, got one on the front of my Surly Krampus.

djkashuba 12-13-16 06:22 PM

Brent I do not think the Point Reyes National Seashore is second to any place in the world in terms of beauty. Great shots. Would like to know your route.

Brent.

Superb Rock Lobster.

Will have to remember that color for the next custom rig.

Can't miss on Revelate bags.imho

I have four of them and you can't kill them with a stick.

Don't forget, they can do custom as well.

Between Swift and Revelate, I don't really need another vendor.

Great pics as well. Snowed here the other day, so the road bikes are shot with another big storm headed for us this weekend.

djkashuba and any other Bay Area folks who might be interested here is the turn-by-turn ride route that I took today. Of course you don't have to start and end in Lagunitas. That's just where I live:

-Start in Lagunitas headed eastbound on Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
-In about 2 miles turn left on Nicasio Valley Road which will take you through the little town of Nicasio.
-In about 8 miles turn left on Point Reyes Petaluma Road.
-In about 3 miles turn right at the graffiti bridge to stay on Pt. Reyes Petaluma Road.
-In about 3 miles turn right on Highway 1.
-In about 1 mile turn left on Cypress Rd.
-In about 1/2 mile turn right on Mesa Rd. which makes a couple of jogs and drops you on Highway 1 in downtown Point Reyes Station in about another 1/2 mile.
-Turn right on Highway one, follow it through town and turn right on Sir Francis Drake Blvd. immediately after the steel highway bridge just out of town.
-Look sharply on your left in about 1/2 mile for the Olema Marsh Trail at the far end of a dirt turnout.
-Follow the trail, then the gravel road, about 1/2 mile to Bear Valley Road.
-Turn right on Bear Valley Road for 100 yards or so. Look sharply on your left just before the Limantour Road for a trail that parallels that road.
-Follow the trail for 1/2 mile or so to a gravel road.
-Turn left on the gravel road and follow it through Kule Loklo the Miwok Indian village to a "T" intersection with another gravel road.
-Turn left on the gravel road which will soon become a rocky trail that drops you into the parking lot of the Pt. Reyes National Seashore Visitors Center.
-Cross the parking lot and turn left on the entrance road.
-In about 1/4 mile turn right on Bear Valley Road.
-In about 1/2 mile turn right on Highway 1 at Olema.
-In about 1/4 mile turn left on Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
-In about 2 miles, at the bottom of a steep descent, turn right just before the highway bridge onto the bike path.
-Follow the bike path through the park. In about a mile it will become a service road. In another mile it will go through the campground and make a sharp left turn across a bridge. Go straight ahead at this point through the Redwood Group Picnic Area and onto the gravel portion of the bike path.
-In about 2 more miles the gravel path will cross a bridge and dump you onto Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
-Turn left on Sir Francis Drake and you will be back at your start in Lagunitas in about a mile.

Anyone who's in the area and would like some company on a ride please get in touch.

A bluebird sky and a great base of cold squeaky snow, it was Stuart’s first day of skiing this year.
He couldn’t have picked a better day to start his season.

Stuart is an old ski patroller which meant we wandered all over the mountain taking in anything from easy groomers to sniffing out powder stashes in some of the steeper in-bound bowls. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a fun day for sure and nice to hang with a fello C&V forumite outside of the bike context.

I will have to take you up on that offer next spring when I travel south for some riding

Wildwood 12-14-16 10:30 AM

Ho Ho Ho, that's funny.
come on @northbend - put a selfie up as well.

northbend had to wait at the bottom of every pitch for me.
And I'm not a slow skier, but like enjoying a fine cycle, I have been known to milk every possible fine turn in the off-piste pow/crud.

Winter's day here in S. Texas--which means it's cloudy--nice run around the Basin to the top of Olmos Dam. I sure love this bike.

Wildwood 12-14-16 05:14 PM

Nice bike @LouB. Hbars+levers set my favorite way.
Teckro levers'?
I need to try those on the next build.

I had a a rare weekday off and mild December weather, and took the Rainbow 'Traut for an easy 40 miles.

Looking down at the old broken bridge on the San Joaquin River in Friant.

Single digit temp today so a few different outings. A pair of 5k classic ski laps at a scenic location (with a waxing in between, sorry the phone froze up). Then a 5 mile path jaunt on the fat bike. Below zero high expected tomorrow so getting out while I can.

Good on you.

I'm riding at the Midway Y.

Stopped along the bike path on the way out from work to adjust some layers and cinch up the wool scarf. 28℉ was a bit warmer than the ride in.
The trees have been decorated with ice for days.
