Hmm, I'm going to have to take pics of some of the Victorians I pass on my commute. I wonder if some folks back then thought they'd look ticky-tacky in 50 years. On the other hand, if it doesn't have a wrap-around porch then it is missing something.

Hey, we've got someone over here from Hunenburg doing some touring. West Coastish, and different mode of transportation. China stuff... I know too many cases of 'critical' stuff being made in China, and failing in use...

We got to travel thru Switzerland, most time in Zermatt for a work assignment. (Work was in Germany and France, not Switzerland.) Beautiful.

Yes, I do appreciate some Victorians, and understand the issue, but the 'Pumpkin' house, (so named by a friend who is an architect), ugh... There is nothing aesthetically pleasing about it. Even worse is when some of these ugly monstrosities are labeled 'Colonials'. Spare me.

The McMansions are like exemplars of poor design to me. The concept could work; but all the details are wrong.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned.

About McMansions, I agree. That pumpkin house sure has some odd features. The setback on the second garage door looks like a "feature" for style. The multiple roof lines aren't cohesive. The octagonal turret is peculiar. Of course, I've seen similar quasi-round sun room on older homes too, nearly Victorian if not actually so, and wondered about their usefulness. I suppose they were nice for sitting and reading on a cold January day 120 years ago. Not sure what you'd use them for today.

No McMansions on today's ride, just barns and gravel. Did a challenging gravel route near RedWing MN. The climbing was sometimes loose and rutted. Was happy to have the 30/32 combo on the bike for the last climb (when I was out of water). GPS said 53 miles and 4500+ climb, beats working.

Zermatt is one of my favorite places here. I used to think Gornergrat was high up. Then I took the Seilbahn up to Klein Matterhorn and Glacier Paradise. From up there, Gornergrat was just a speck! However, the walk down from Gornergrat to Zermatt is just wonderful. Mountainbiking it would also be great. I do quite a bit of work in Germany as well. What for a project were you working on in Zermatt? Finance industry, or real work?

Gorgeous PX-10. I've been keeping my eye out for one. My parents threw theirs away in '98 when we moved. Wish we kept it.

In Germany my work was in Ismaning and my 'fun' was there and Munchen. My wife and daughter had more play time, and I don't recollect where all they went. That occupied most of one week (the earlier part). The second assignment was in Grenoble and, kindly, it was scheduled for the later portion of that week. The in-between time was mostly spent in Zermatt. We stayed at the Hotel de la Poste. Uncertain if it's still in operation, I can't find anything that ties Unique Hotel Post to the one where we stayed, which was a little rough around the edges. However, the view obtained while sitting upon the throne made up for everything else. Right out the window was the Matterhorn. The other item I recollect clearly was the bar, or maybe restaurant/bar was called the Zermatt Yacht Club. There were lots of nautical bits all over.

We didn't do as much hiking as was planned because our daughter managed to twist her ankle pretty badly. (Did she listen to me??? NOOOO. Does she listen to me, now? Sometimes, LOL.) We were a fair ways up some trail on the side of Zermatt opposite The Matterhorn. We had to carry her down... Thankfully she was quite young at the time, < 10.

Oh, forgot, was it real work. I was a 'technical competent' working in cryogenics, high vacuum, and vacuum processing. My role in this case was technical support/instruction to another company's technical support staff, who were not familiar with the equipment.

I went on a nice early morning Father's Day ride. It was just beautiful outside.

I've been remiss about posting. Events have conspired to keep us off the bike once or twice. Events have conspired to keep me too dang busy. So...

We did 32.2 miles on the tandem yesterday, but we took no pictures. (I recall a grade school teacher saying that none or zero was singular. So the proper form of that sentence should be "We took no picture." It don't seem right tho'. People just duzzn't talk like that, now duz they?

We did another 37.6 miles today, and by golly we DID take a pic or two.

Today's ride was an exploration the wildlife sanctuary areas along the Sudbury River and the roads through Lincoln, MA.

Those who serve mankind deserve our thanks, those who paid the ultimate price deserve to be remembered, and all of us should wish it wasn't necessary (but always will be).

Also had a good ride with my sweetie who does not ride much 5mi. yesterday and 17 today in prep for 30 next Sat. very proud of her!

As far as Fender1's comments regarding mid century modern architecture and design, it was just modern the first time around. A lot was designed by leading architects and designers of the period, including Saarinen, Eames, Mies van der Rohe, Knoll, Schindler & Neutra. Heywood Wakefield, Lane, Knoll, Herman Miller, and Broyhill Brasilia furniture/furnishings are still sought after today. The homes that Ed. posted are from builders catalog homes, $395 for 5 sheets.

Today, I rode about a 16 mile round trip to check out Eyesondesign.org car show today at the Henry and Eleanor Ford Estate in Grosse Pointe Shores. It was a steamy 90 on the way home with a headwind.
