Picked up a 1988 Bridgestone MB-4 yesterday. It was at the trailhead of a popular local mountain bike area, in non-rideable condition, with a sign that said "FREE" taped to the top tube. Frame and components are in great shape though, it really just needs new cables and housing. Very classy with the chainstay mounted U-brake! My size and everything. Not sure what will come of it yet, but I thought it was a great find. I'll have to post pictures tonight from home.

murray spectra 10speed all i can tell is that is was made at the tennessee plant when it was still union but i can't find anything on the year. it had only been ridden once before i bought it from a collector for $75.

my last bike which was given to me for free was an 85 schwinn mesa runner which my brother is using currently. this one has a broken deraileur its going to be converted to a single speed.

I believe I'd move to the dark side myself if I found a frame like that waiting for me. Do you mind if I ask "how much"?

It was $150, which is low for a Paramount P-15, but considering the modifications, I don't really know if those enhance or detract from the value. At any rate, I didn't buy it to flip but to ride.

I'd say you got quite a deal, whether or not those are enhancements or detractions from a collector's point of view. I've never ridden a Paramount, but I bet it's nice. To me, it's prettier than a Raleigh International.

Saved from the metal recycler this weekend, a Shogun Custom Sport. Surprisingly nice Tange Chromolloy frame with Tangalloy fork, components dated 1989. No wheels.

What do you do with something like this... buy cheap wheels (that'll come to $100 minimum) and flip it? Is it worth it?

So I rescued this from a friend of a friends garage, he gave it to me as payment for helping him move. I just got it last night, I have a bunch of parts I am going to add to get it working. Not really gonna get anything new though. My wife was not too happy though. She already said No More bikes.

I'd see if you could pick up a set of used wheels off of Craigslist. Although, you could get a set of cheap, new wheels from Niagara Cycles for about $80.00 shipped.

They needed to be trued right out of the box, but have been solid ever since.

That Shogun looks like it's in decent condition. If you follow Machin Shin's advice, you can probably get $200 for the bike. It needs pedals, too, though.

I picked up a 1985 Trek 420 two weeks ago for $150 on CL. After taking apart the front and rear hubs and re-packing the bearings it rides great! Here it is.

Looks nice and clean, I like the pedals on it too.

1985 Apollo Kuwahara Sierra Grande - Shimano Deore (stag's head) group, Shimano high flange MD475 high flange hubs laced to Araya RM25 wheels in a 36 4 cross pattern (these are bombproof), Suntour XC pedals.

The frame is very clean and the bike rides like it was new and cost me a whopping $30.00... it's a plain 4130 frame but like most Kuwaharas of this era, is very nicely put together and finished.

The saddle is new and all it needs is a little tlc in the way of a new chain, lube, and grips.

It has a Terry ergonomic and suspended saddle and I just came back after I dialled in a few things (the stem was dangerously high) and it is a really sweet riding bike with nary a problem save that the chain is at it's replacement point.

Thanks! I got it basically in that condition. Just needed a little bit of polishing. Those pedals are the $30 Forte ATB pedals from Performance. I got them for $12 after discounts.

Picked up three flip bikes off Craigs List in the last week. I was out of inventory, so the timing is good. The first one is a 1985 Cannondale T500, and its my size! It has been upgraded with friction bar cons. I'll have to decide between it and my Miyata 215ST (which also was upgraded with Suntour barcons by the prior owner). The frame is straight, but boy, the paint is chipped up. I have never touched one up to this extent. Might be my first powder coat.

After all the talk on the valuation subforum on how valuable old steel Treks are, I decided to pick up a couple of projects.

I picked up a 1984 Trek 520, pretty nice shape overall. It is pretty much done and ready for its next owner.

The third is a 1985 Trek 500. I had to value the 500 at its components, as unfortunately, right now, the stem and post are both stuck! Hopefully I will be able to get them free, as it is a good looking frame. Its a Frankenbike, with modern 7 speed Tiagra brifters and modern Ultegra brake calipers. Still has the Cyclone FD. If I can save the frame, I might build it back up with Cyclone bits, I have most of them in hand.

I'll have to post pics later. It just shows again that there are bikes out there if you move fast.

hey, let me know the scoop on the T500...my own Cannondale touring bike has inspired two (really) friends to ask me to find them a good touring/commuting bike...and you're not too far away from east TN!

Took the bike downtown to run some errands was not at all surprised at how nice the bike rides as I already have two other Kuwahara mtbs and this has the same laid back geometry and is a really nice fit.

Then I stopped by my shop and swapped out those old crunchy (and probably stock) tires for some 1.5 road slicks, replaced the stock front pads with some salmon Kool Stops, replaced the ratty grips, and lubed up the chain and squeaky derailer.

She's a pretty sweet ride.

And dammit... she's green.
