If you care to read, following is the mini-saga of a bike hunter:
It's been a virtual drought this garage sale season for me. I was ready to write off wasting any more time this summer when I spotted the ad for a Gitane at an estate sale. Went there to discover a nice mixte with fenders...asking price $200. Estate sales!
No thanks. However, while waiting in line for the house to open, I struck up a conversation with a friendly antiques 'picker' and was overheard by yet another friendly 'picker' who told me he had a nice Italian bike with Campagnolo derailleurs I could have for $100. Told me to call him later in the day so he could tell me more about it.
On to other sales, I was beginning to feel defeated again. However, I stumbled on a cyclist's garage sale (not a common occurrence) and picked up this Dura Ace Triple stash and wheels for a screaming deal:
Feeling a little less glum, I started thinking used modern may be the better way to go, since there is probably more of it available. Afterall, vintage stuff is naturally getting scarcer and the competition for it fiercer.
I then called the guy with the vintage Italian bike and determined over the phone it is was a boom model with Campy Valentino derailleurs. Not terrible, but not worth the trip to me. As I declined and said goodbye, he mentioned he did have a couple Masi bikes I might be interested in...
...an hour or so later, the vintage madness returned and I came home with these two, one an early 70s Italian constructed Gran Criterium, and the other a later model (not sure which yet) repainted by Cyclart. Also met a very friendly and interesting self professed 'hoarder' who had some amazing stuff, including bikes.

This is why I wander around on Friday and Saturday mornings. My youngest son goes along and does the recon. I drop him off so I don't have to park. He looks for the goodies and he has a great eye for non-Walmart related bike items.
The kids came home yesterday with a fendered Bridgestone 500. They were out riding and they noticed the bike at a sale nearby. My oldest told the owner he'd take it. He kept his hand on the bike for twenty minutes while our youngest son came home to raid the family bike fund. No authorization necessary for a purchase of that size or quality.
The bike just happens to be my size, is a beautiful silver in color, and has a super nice set of fenders. Looks like Berthouds! She needs all of the usual maintenance items, but who cares.
This does not compare to your haul in any way, but it can be great fun to find deals when you least expect it.
Oh, the kids also talked me into a very nice Celestron refractor telescope that was at the same sale. $50 with tripod, case, and additional eyepieces/lenses.

I need to train my 7 and 5 year old in the way of the bike hunt. I do drivebys as well, looking for large circles with spokes in them. I'm sure I've missed some hidden gems in a garage somewhere, but where I live the territory is not densely populated. On the occasions I've brought my kids, they end up with more loot than I do, though I've told them they each only get one item for every bike I find. They're not yet requesting expensive scientific equipment, though $50 is a great buy for that!
Let's just say they/we were "very" successful.
I've got enough now to start a Lego's franchise!
By the way, the scope is an astounding value. It is going up to the cabin for stargazing opps outside the city limits of St. Paul. Can't wait.

Circa '84 Schwinn World Sport.
(It cleaned up really well.)

Lost Again
The wife and I drove to another town to get my Father In Law out of the Nursing Home and out for dinner, etc. I took my Bike rack out of my car truck so there would be room for his wheel chair. (small car). So what happens? Almost there and I see a old silver Panasonic DX2000 on a pile of trash on the curb. I go out and looked, and it was in good shape, a small frame (too small for me) and the parts were low end. The wheels were in great shape but no quick release.
So here I am in a little mazda, soon to have 3 people and a wheelchair in it, no bike rack, and not a single damn tool to pull the wheelsoff with.
If so I could have squeezed it all into the backseat and left it in his room while we were out.
So I drive off, consoling myelf that I could never ride it, even if I could have flipped it. Four hours later I drove back with a crescent wrench and as expected it was gone.

There are a couple of Rudge cranksets/chainrings on ebay right now.
Nice Rudge Tom. What year is it? It looks like the crank has been replaced unless not all Rudges had the "Hand" crank. I think I saw one on the bay recently. I still haven't done anything with the 48 Rudge I have except buy a set of Raleigh lights to go with the Dynohub.

Congrats on your Meade. you'll really enjoy that scope. Also, thank you for the resource. I appreciate it. We have three scopes, an Orion 12" Dobsonion, an Orion Short tube 80 scope for birding, and the kids have an Orion Starblast 6. All of the scopes get a great deal of use around here and at the cabin. We get a kick out of taking the spotting scope up to Hawk Ridge in Duluth, Minnesota for the raptor migrations in the fall. The Celestron gives us another versatile, portable scope. Judging by the clear day here today, I'll be able to give her a little try tonight. Can't wait.

So i got this bike for free at my LBS and i am unsure what to do to it.
Fixing it up, repaint it and so on or turn it into a SS/Fixie ?
I have looked all over for some speccs for it but cant find any, not even a picture with this color scheme, maybe some of you can shine a light on it.
What i know is that it is a Crescent, it says "Chrome 3000" on the frame and the rims are Maillard and Shimano 600 EX gears and drivetrain.

This is a special version of the Crescent Competition numbered 92311 and only sold in 1986.
From start it was kitted with fenders and a carrier and was more like a luxuary sports/commuter bike.

The trek 510 has fenders!! Both the fenders(silver ESGE's) and the bike(1979 Trek 510) were catches of the day,,,,BD

Happened to hop on local CL when an ad popped up. Between when I called and when I got there, the gentleman had 40+ calls! and 4 more while I was looking it over.
Mid-90's Bianchi EL, celeste. Ultegra/DA mixed group. Even has a celeste Selle Italia gel flite saddle. Looks like it has seen very little use
