Yesterday I answered a CL ad that was local for bicycle parts at wholesale prices, so I packed up my truck with supplies and my dog and headed out for a 25 min ride to see what this guy had to offer, his name is Mike and he had just purchased the contents of a large bike shop that was a Schwinn dealer that closed 2yrs ago. I was instantly overwhelmed when I looked in his garage there were boxes and boxes of parts,boxes and boxes of wheels and tires walls filled with anything you could need to build a bike from the ground up including brand new Schwinn Super Sport frame sets ( at least 10 ) still in original boxes. I spent 5 hours there just looking through stuff and talking with him and it turns out we know all the same people and he is the best friend of one of my best friends brothers. I am going to help him sell some of the stuff that he is not used to dealing with ( anything non BMX ) and I am going to bring him here first as he is showing an interest in vintage road bikes and has picked up a few very nice bikes already.
He is a member of bmxmuseum.com and likes to help the younger guys get more involved in the sport of bmx racing and getting to know him for the short time that I did I think he would fit right in here with the rest of us. Part of what I picked up yesterday is going to help get some of my projects a little closer to finished.

Tires include a set of NOS Schwinn 16" for a Pixie I picked up this spring and two sets of IRC road tires in 27" and 26"x 1 3/8" at $10 a set I couldn't pass this up and will be going back for a lot more. I already had him put aside a Super Sport frame in my size 22"

Man that would be sweet if he does, I didn't see any shifters at all so I am sure there is a box with something in it. He hasn't gone through all the stuff yet and is taken it a box at a time. The one thing I know there are hundreds of are the metal toe clips in every size and they are the good ones (christolphe or something like that) and all the different colored straps for them.

How many dozen do you want, I have never seen so many there are pairs in bags then there are cases of them buy size in bulk without the packaging it's unreal. The guy that owned the shop originally must have gotten a hell of a deal on them.

What I'm hoping is my next catch of the day is leaning against a house a few miles from me. I spotted a vintage road bike yesterday with my well-trained C/V eye as I was out running errands. Did a U-turn and checked it out. Mid-80's Trek head badge, front canti flopped in the open position, rusty chain dangling on the ground, no front tire. Looking closer, it's a Trek 620 with a triple crank and a rack (and the Helicomatic rear hub). "HK" stamped on the crank makes it a 1984 model. Rang the doorbell and noticed that the place is cleaned out, so I can't make an offer. Left a note tucked between the brake cable and top tube. With any luck the landlord will see it. Fingers crossed!

EDIT: It's on!!! Got a call this afternoon... happened to be a guy I know from the kids' school bus stop.

Here is the Trek 620. Of course it's in worse shape than I remembered, the rack was a figment of my imagination (wishful thinking), and it's another 56cm. Aarrgh!! I need to find a 60. It's missing half of the rear brake- anybody out there have the other half? First Campy bit I've ever owned - downtube shifters. Anybody know what model? Is this the half-step gearing that I've been reading about? This one is a real mess and it's going to take me quite some time to sort out. Hard to argue with the low, low price of $0.00, though.

Stopped in the co-op after work and walked into some great donations. Local hand-built Proctor with campy. It was completely covered in black grime when I saw it. 531 frame and fork, 57cm sq. so it is one the edge of being too small for me. with the post just under the height limit the fit is good I just need to raise the stem a bit and maybe swap it out for a long one. The bad part is the rings or the spider is bent and the stem is frozen in the fork. I'll be hitting it with some ammonia later today. It has the angles still on the seat and head tube lugs. I think it will make a good cafe/commuter/light touring bike.

neil - That is a sweet find... from my own experience with Proctor frames would make a very close inspection of the frame tubes and treat it with frame saver or boiled linseed oil.

The area at the lower seat tube seems especially prone to rust... the Proctor bikes (one off builds) tend to be better than the Proctor / Townsend models which were built in small series.

It is apparently bike-by-the-roadside season... just picked up a free Univega Gran Rally. 1024 butted Hi-Ten, SunTour Cyclone derailleurs, Sunshine high-flange/Araya 27" wheelset. The bars look cool - Sakae Road Champion "Randnner". The bad news is that it has been crashed - top and down tubes are buckled behind the head lugs. Oddly the fork is straight and the front wheel is true. Guess my parts bin will get some new additions. I would rant about finding "another" 56cm frame but since this is not a "rider" I'll let it go. Where are all the 60s??

I have a few additions to the 'catch' list...first a late '70s (i'm guessing....square 'badge' style headtube badge) Peugeot "grand sport", carbolite 103, cottered cranks, 27" wheels, but DIG the fenders and built-in wiring clips + bracket for the generator/lights...and a YELLOW bulb up front to boot! (this one was going to be robbed of the rack, fenders and lights then tuned & flipped, but it may displace a Schwinn I was trying to morph into a French city bike style bike....since, after all, it is French & al





a question....if I have cottered cranks, would it be pretty likely I also have French threading for the BB?

The next one is a late '80s Schwinn Qualifier....a BMX/road bike set up for a short-lived paved BMX style racing series as I have gathered. The Internet says only a few hundred of these were made, so that's got to be true, right?



and, just for good measure, here's a pair of Columbia 3 speeds (one with coaster brake) that i literally saved from the dump...these will donate a few key parts for the series of strange rat-bike cruisers I have a mind to build some time soon..

There is a guy near me who has been trying for about a year to sell a Haro Dart (same type of bike as your Schwinn) on craigslist for $200. Maybe you could buy that too and revive the sport.

I am spending the summer in Mali, West Africa. I have come across a ton of old 3-speeds from all over europe. I have looked up some of the brands like: Rivel, Raleigh, Gazelle, etc... I am planning on buying a couple of them. Does anyone have any idea of the actual value of bikes like this? I know this is very limited information... sorry. But I would greatly appreciate any help I can get. They are asking $50 - $70 each.

Raleighs and Gazelles in good shape would be worth that. I sold a 71 Sports for $125 in Houston, it was in pretty nice shape with new cables, etc..,,,,BD

You need to pose this question in the Appraisals Subforum HERE but you need to provide more information - and pictures if possible. The value depends much on the market: Few here would be more familiar than you with Mali West Africa prices, so I'm guessing $50-70 is what they're worth there. On the other hand, if your intent is to select some pristine rod-braked gem to bring home with you (wherever that is) it could be worth significantly more.

Best to bear in mind though that any such valuation is intended to assess value for resale: If you just plan to buy a bike for your own use, you can not go too far wrong at those prices, and you'll have to consider what it's worth to you, to have a bike to ride and enjoy this summer.

Thanks! I am planning on buying two bikes, one for myself and one for my wife, to take back to Tennessee. I hope to use them to commute back and forth from work. However, if I discover that they have greater value anywhere else in the world then I wouldn't be apposed to buying several bikes to refurbish and sell.
