See any over-priced bikes that need alot of work? Seller doesn't even bother to clean the bike before selling it? Kind of a "numbskull"/"should be sent to the dump" thread.

1970s Rolls Touring Bike - $80 (Manhattan)

Reply to: sale-v6xde-1062674464@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

Used. Made in Italy. This bike has been left outside for years so it will need some TLC, still very salvagable. Needs to be painted, tires & tubes oiling, greasing and a new chain. Use it for parts. Frame size 57 cm or standover is 32 inches tall. Steel frame/forkset. Chrome fork. Aluminum rims(Ambrosio) 27 1/4, with quick release skewers. Located in Manhattan off of 43rd & 11th.

What's wrong with a little patina? Seriously, though, I met a flipper out here in Joisey who claims his best sellers in the city are Varsities and Continentals that are functional, but not bright and clean. Buyers ask for rusty chrome rims as a theft deterrent.

P.S. You must REALLY be bothered by this, having created two threads about it!

Yes! I actually had a little commotion here when I went to post it, and wound up sending it twice. My apologies. Getting back to the thread, it's not so much the condition that puzzles me. It is the price given the condition that gets me. Not everybody has their own parts bin (and knows what to do with those parts)..."caveat emptor" ("let the buyer beware"). Could really spoil cycling for alot of people. Some of the postings are pretty funny, though, in a silly way.

Universal brakes are nothing to sneeze at, especially if they have a Mod # stamped into the caliper. The downtube shifters are sweet and a matching set of Ambrosio's laced to high-flange hubs are very desirable to some collectors, even in rough shape.
Considering it's $80 in NY... Not out of line....It's better to leave that bike in "as found" condition. Sometimes we are all greatful that a seller didn't try to "fix it up" or clean it w/ paint thinner, etc..
(I think that the seller knows what they are doing; It is no coincidence that he/she managed to get closeup's of the brakes, wheels, drive-side image, seat tube decals, DT shifters, stem, but avoided a closeup of the ho-hum lugwork.)

Duplication of the Numbskull thread.

If you want to see a GOOD example of outrageous pricing vs. condition, look at the latest posting in NoTD - a completely rotted, Schwinn Fairlady musclebike for $11,000:

Nothing wrong with the Rolls that a some TLC and a kiddie pool full of oxalic acid wouldn't fix. I would offer $50 for it.

A local guy is/was selling an early Schwinn World Sport (hi-ten frame) in very nice condition, wanted $175. It wasn't moving so he reposted a couple of times. The local Village Idiot/CL Bike Police climbed all over the poor guy in a post to CL telling him the price is outrageous, needed to lower it, get a clue, real insulting etc. etc. I usually stay away from getting involved in that crap. I flagged the village idiot but left the seller alone. He lowered his price $25, and now the post is removed. I'm guessing he got $125 or more for the bike which is within reason. I've looked at a couple of local prices and said "no way". Then the post is down in 48 hours. Vintage bikes around here are continuing to sell at all time high prices. Folks don't bother to clean them up. Just remove it from under the house, take a pic and post on CL and get your cash. It's crazy.

I'll say this, those calipers could fit some FAT tires and fenders.

I think this thread may fall apart quicker than the POS Hercules pictured below. Probably is best to stick with one "numbskull" thread. My apologies.

That's sounds cheap. Even Mickey D's offer the "10 Dollar Menu" in NYC.

It is crazy. Not long ago they would have removed it from under the house and dragged it to the curb for bulk pick-up day. Actually, I hope it returns to those days, since "I brake for curbside treasures".

"Needs to be painted, tires & tubes oiling, ...."

Heck, if he'd just oil the tubes and tires, he could ask double the price!

+1. I think $80 in NYC for that bike is fine. You couldn't touch the brakes and rims on eBay for that. It's got some good parts on it.

Its not so bad. The saddle is in good shape. That alone might take more than $80 on ebay. I kinda like the bike, too, though the "professional" tuning is definitely lacking.
