Looking for some opinions on 27'' wheels.

Does anybody have any opinions on the following wheels? Mavic MA40 laced to a Shimano 600 hub, Mavic MA2 laced to Shimano 600 hub, Rigida rims laced to Normandy hubs, Wolber Super Champions, and Samir Saminox?

I don't have any opinion in the particular combinations you mentioned - but there is no doubt that I love Mavic rims and Normandy hubs in the 27" denomination.

It always AMAZES me why anyone would replace these rims with 700c.

I have Normandy Luxes laced to Weinmann concaves on my 'everyday' bike and can't imagine spending the time and hassle changing them out for 700cs.

27 wheels are fine, but the fact of the matter is you can get a much wider range of tire width in 700c than you can in 27. If you want racing slicks, it's a real challenge to find them in 27, and same goes for cyclocross, or even full on mountain bike tires. That being said, I think the 32mm size of your average 27 inch tire comes close to ideal for mixed terrain and rough roads.
