Please tell me about the Raliegh Hierarchy

I really don't know anything about C&V Raleighs or what I should look for. Would you please tell me about the Raleigh heirarchy of bikes and models.

Thanks

Depends on the time period. The experts will correct me, but I believe the top 3 was Professional, Competition and International (in that order). After that the Super Course, Grand Prix, than Record.

Arguably the best general lightweight guide to go on for all years after 1969 (swap International and Comp. positions though); even the Raleigh USA lineup mimicked this. The Team Professional also sat above the Pro, mind you.

I think the International would come above the Competition by pretty much any standard. International and Professional were on the same level with the exception of the brakes; the primary difference between them was styling-- Professional was Italian style, International was more English or French.

But of course you're completely right that it depends on the time period. In the 30's - 50's the top of the line was the Record Ace (or Record Ace Moderne), but by 1970 the Record (or Record Ace) was at the bottom of the heap. Similarly, Lenton Grand Prix was high in the food chain in the 50's, but very low in the 70's.

Hey, what's with the avatar? I went to high school with those guys.

+1...the Competition that I had came with Campy Gran Sport and the International has Campagnolo Nuovo Record...I'd consider the International higher on the food chain than the competition. A Competition typically sells for around $300 - $400 and an International typically sells $600 - $800. Finally, the International is listed before the Competition in the brochures.

Here is a BF thread that deals a little with the bottom end of the Raleigh line.

https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...200&highlight=

It's confusing, and it changed from year to year. But, Record-Grand Prix-Super Course covers the lower end of the English made line.

i believe the international is also different from the pro in that the angles are more relaxed, giving a more relaxed ride. I've read this a few places but I can't speak from experience, so take it for what it is.

Here's some data to show the hierarchy:

The 1973 price list from Raleigh USA:

The 1976 price list from Raleigh Canada:

That year or maybe for 1974 Raleigh brought out a very nice full 531 RRA. I've seen examples on the interweb, but, of course, it doesn't seem to appear in the catalogs for that period!

It was '73 - they're very nice bikes, most (all the ones I've seen) have a nifty yellow/white paint scheme (as per the ad), and they're equipped with good quality French components. Well worth keeping an eye out for.

They also did a second dark-color paint variant. I don't remember what the color was, but I know I've seen one on the Mt. Airy (bike123.com) site. It wasn't the el-cheapo, late 1980's RRA either - it was the '73 531 job with the 5 equal seattube bands.

^ It was '73, and yes, they were a very high quality bike, albeit equipped with French components. I still have one (my only ride), but I equipped mine with Campy NR. That price list is the first official thing from Raleigh that I have ever seen on it, as it did not appear in any catalog I have ever seen. I have only ever seen them in the white/goldenrod color scheme. The LBS that I bought mine from told me that only 500 were made, and each Raleigh dealer was given one. Not sure how true it is or not. They also told me that they could not get the Pro that year.

Sheldon had a page on Retro Raleighs:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/rra.html

The Raleigh Record Ace throughout most of the '70s was a low end bike, similar (or the same as) the Record.

Neal,

Thank you for those, a terrific resource there! If you don't mind me asking, where did you find them?

Did the RRA have vertical drops? I had a chance to get one back in the day, but opted for a Motobecane Grand Record. I think the RRA was a true racing bike - tubulars, racing geometry.
.
Also heard that it was the bikes used by the English Junior National team back then.

Yes - Campagnolo vertical drops. Very modern for the era.

You're welcome! The '73 price list and others from the 1970s are on bulgier.net: https://www.bulgier.net/pics/bike/Cat...gh_pricelists/

The '76 is a scan from a card I acquired on an eBay auction along with a bunch additional Raleigh Canada paper goods from the 70s.

Thanks Neal
I've often wondered which was the more desirable bike, the "Raleigh" Record or the "Rampar" R-1. The Raleigh Record costs $1 more than the Rampar and weighs about a 1/2 lb less.

That's my recollection too, Kurt - why I hedged and went with "most." Thanks for confirming my fading memory.
