Its a love/hate thing around here.

Paid fifty bucks for mine and love it.

Hate how much money got dumped into it.

Then there's the weight thing...

Just finished redoing a Varsity. Easiest rebuild in the world! These bikes actually look pretty decent.

well there must be a reason why so many millions were made. Surely "It was cheaper than a Raleigh" doesn't account for all of those sales.

They make good beater bikes.

You can use a flimpsy lock with one.

Bike thieves dont wanna touch it because it can't be resold on the black market.

So its good for a ride into the "bad" part of town - if you live in one that has one!

I like the Schwinn Continental - especially in root beer. $50 is a good price for a clean road-able example. "Weighs a "tun" but it's fun"

yeah I think that's not a lite bike. but there are plenty of reasons to buy and ride that bike. I have a Varsity I acquired along the way to my current lite summer joy ride bike. The Varsity is a sweet luxurious silent ride. I haven't ridden it in a while but I'm not getting rid of it

Why were they so popular?

I was in middle school and high school during the heyday of the Varsity. Everyone had one, which pretty much insured that *almost* everyone else wanted one. It was just part of the uniform.

My parents wanted to get me a Varsity when I was in 6th grade. I spent a lot of energy convincing them of the superiority of the Raleigh Grand Prix, and they relented. See? Some of us were bike snobs even back in the day. I did have a Varsity briefly in high school, I bought one missing wheels from a friend for $10. I put some wheels on from the LBS where I worked, rode it for a few weeks and sold it for a profit.
