1974 Schwinn Varsity Single Speed Conversion/Fix.

I've seen this post in several other places but none of them seemed to tell me about what parts I need or where to get them. Last spring less than a year ago I painted my bike and I thought I should also go single speed. I already found out what tool I need to remove the old 10-speed cassette(still haven't bought it though). I'd like to know what to do after I get rid of my old cassette and what to replace it with to be a single speed. Also the wires for the brakes and their rubber slip on housings have gotten rusted and raggedy, where do I get new ones made for my bike?

Thanks, I hope someone can help me.

for a single speed you just put on a single speed freewheel and move the spacers on the axle from the drive side to the non-drive side until you get a good chainline. Then re-dish the wheel so its centered between the brake calipers.

Or just buy a cheap single speed rear wheel from somewhere like Niagara Cycle. Here's a flip flop Fixed/Free wheel for 65 bux https://www.niagaracycle.com/product_...ucts_id=447883

A new wheel will have the advantage of an alloy rim over the Schwinn Steel rims

Local bike shop (LBS) will have the brake cables and housings. You can cut them to length yourself or have them do it for you.
If your gonna order a wheel from Niagara you can order the cables there, too.
