Made in Italy, which is unusually rare for this vintage Bennotto bicycle. Great condition. Extremely lightweight. Smooth, fast ride. Very well made.
$340 seems high for just "any random 70s road bike" but from what I've read on Sheldon Brown, and here, the Italian-built ones are very nice bikes indeed...
Thoughts anyone? And anyone wanna take a guess as to frame size? Looks small-ish to medium to me, maybe 54cm? Owner had no more (or even bigger!) pics and didn't know size.

Thanks, the only reason I haven't gone by is it's about an hour and a half drive... depending on people's responses here I may drive down in the next few days, or at least call and make an offer.

I agree. There's no way the graphics are ca. 1970's - that paint sure looks more like late 80's to me too, if the Colnago line up is anything to go by. Even the mid 80's Peugeot lineup reflects a similar design aesthetic.

And that is pretty important since to my understanding in later years production moved to Mexico and those bikes are much less sought-after. He states "Made in Italy" pretty confidently in the ad, though. Geez I wish it was in town, I'd be there now. Would getting a serial # from him help you think?

Aside from that, I don't believe it's early 70's; the paint has been mentioned, but aside from that, the downtube shifters appear to be mounted to brazed-on bosses, and the top tube cable is routed through brazed on guides; neither of those is an early 70's phenomenon. The brakes appear to be mid-level sidepull calipers; I don't see QR's. High end early 70's bikes could have high end sidepulls, but the mid-level ones had centerpulls.
Furthermore, I don't see any reason to call it a touring bike.
And finally, the pedals are low to mid level rat trap pedals with reflectors; again, not indicative of a high end early 70's bike.
I don't know what it is, but I wouldn't drive very far to look at it, and I definitely wouldn't bring $300 with me if I did.

Mid 80's Mexican Benotto, if you ask me.
They were decent bikes, and unless this particular one is pristine, I'd have a hard time paying over $300 for it.

That isn't a repaint, I have the same paint scheme on my Benotto. It is probably from 1988 or so, I really have no idea. The parts on the Benotto in the ad look pretty low end, I wouldn't pay $325 for it myself but I don't know what the New Orleans market is like.
Here's mine, a Modolo 3000 which was close to the top of the line at the time. The one in the ad appears to have fender tabs so it is probably a lower-end model

I dunno, but is ANYTHING out of Mexico really that bad?? Those frames look really nice to me, at least from the pics. Only reason I can think of dismissing these bikes is if they have the propensity of brazing on the lugs and braze-ons failing on many of their frames, or premature corrosion because of poor prep at the factory. Is that the case with Bennoto "Hecho en Mexico"??
VW fans seem to feel the same with Jettas and Neu Beetles made in Mexico. Maybe it's just perception caused by rumours and other "ugly" stuff....

Nothing really "wrong" with them. Zero collectibility (I know, that's not really a word) at this point. When they were new, they were "OK", just nothing really that special about them, either.
Mexican made Fender Stratocasters have the same stigma. They're OK. Nothing super special. The Strat for the masses. But they are certainly not "junk" (by and large), either.

Supply seems to be lower as well - of course many steel bikes were lost in the post-Katrina flood and although there is a history of road biking here not many well-kept mid- to high-end models ever show up on the market. Lots of Puegeots; I believe one of the LBSs operating in the 70s-80s moved a lot of them (got an '86 Peugeot PSN-10 a while back.) There was a 3Rensho at a LBS recently but it was gone before I could get a look at it.
