Mid 70's Dawe's Galaxy: Drive side/chain stay clearance issue.....

There's enough room with the dropout spacing for a 7spd.........once I actually get the wheel in. The problem is there's not enough room for more than a 5spd without catching and dragging on the chain stay where it connects at the drop out. I have to smack the wheel to get it to go in. I'm not finished putting this thing together, but it'd be nice if I could run 7spd's in the rear.

Is there anything you folks could suggest to remedy this? My bright idea is to grind the stay down a hair because that's really all it would take. But, meh......regardless of how it would damage the chrome (the paint is beat to hell already....got it that way), I don't know how safe it would be. Idea'rs???

Thanks......

i know exactly what you are talking about. you just need to cold set your frame to 126 or something close. also keep in mind you probably have a RD claw that can make it a little tricky to get your wheel on.

spreading your frame will make it easier to get your wheel on as well as allow you to run a 126 or 130mm hub.

edit: i just reread your post. you probably need to spread your frame AND realign the dropouts.

I'm sure yours is a lot nicer looking than mine. Mine's yellow.......just like this'n......

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/_idKIhdWTcu...0/DSC03820.JPG

Only mine's bigger. 23" TT, as I recall. I love this bike. At some point I may wind up repainting it the same yellow. But, I have yet to see any repro decals for it. So, I'm a bit reluctant. The chrome is really in pretty good shape, though.

Ah......here's my frame exactly........

Mine's set up differently, though. I swapped bars because the GB's were so narrow and awkward.....beautiful as they are. I put chrome mtn bars with a nice sweep back and 2" of rise........like these........

I'm setting mine up basically like that red one only with the original Weinmann centerpulls, 700c wheels (to run some fat 35's), Weinmann levers of off a Raleigh mixte, a brown, double sprung Brookes, and some Huret gear with the old, cottered Stronglight. And, fenders in dark blue to match the decals. The Simplex stuff died a long time ago.....pffth. Familiar story, I know. Anyway, so far it's looking spiffy. Just need to get the gear thing happening.

Say, you know what's screwy to me about these frames? The brake bridge is so dang high above the wheel. Any idea why the hell that is? You gotta use a long reach caliper just to reach the rim. Which means the pad adjustment is maxed out on 700c's. Not that it matters.......it still stops just fine. But, why? It also makes for a tricky rack fitting as the caliper will smack into the rack if you don't have one tall enough. Hmpfh!

That's how most of my old bikes are.... crazy amounts of reach to the rim surface. The nice thing about that is you can usually squeeze fat tires in those old frames and have plenty of room left for fenders.

That is SO painfully pretty. The shape of the frame reminds me a lot of my Raleigh gran sport, but with fancier lugs and prettier colors.

Isn't it though? I wish mine was that clean looking. I got mine from a barter with an older gentleman. He had two; this yellow one and an orange one. The orange one was much more faded, though. Anyway, I offered to build him three good, solid, complete bicycles if he'd allow me the yellow one and a few others. He's like 72 yrs old, but as lean and muscular as any serious athlete. However, he's dirt poor living on SS and has only his bicycles to get him around save the occasional automobile ride from a friend. INCREDIBLE artist, too! And, yet he lives in a filthy, run down shack barely insulated with about 20 cats. Hey.......it's Winslow, AR. Fine, eccentric culture........ even in redneck territory.....
