What is this Italian Mondial? Can't find any info on it...

I spotted this bike at a shop today, and I can't find any info on it. It's a strange beast, it has a shimano 600 arabesque group on it from the 80's, but it has 700c Mavic tubular wheels with a 5 speed cassette which would be much older than an arabesque group. It says it's made in italy. The front fork crown is pretty ornate, I didn't get a picture of it though, I just had a sec to snap this pic with my cell phone and its not very good. It's the letter M with two other letters below it. I looked at the dropouts but they have either been drilled out, or came that way so I couldn't recognize who made them. Again, sorry for the bad picture...

Ok, well, it only took me over a month to get down there and take some better pictures but here it is... It has Gian Roberts shifters and Hubs, Mavic rims, Arabesque brakes and derailleurs. This should be enough info for someone to properly identify this thing!

What do you need to identify, it is a Mondial. They made mostly gas-pipe bike-boom 10 speeds in the 70's that were also fully Gian Robert equipped. But they also made some nicer models, which this one would be. Looks like early-mid 80's.

Usually when you google an old bike manufacturer, you get tons of info on them.. people who dug them out of scrap piles, found them in barns, turn them to SS's.. but apparently the existence of Mondial the bike company was never transferred to the www.. I can only find one reference to a Cicli Mondial from Australia, and that's it. Perhaps you're right, they were all gas pipe and not worth recognition. I haven't been collecting bikes since the 70's so I haven't ever heard of Mondial, and with no info on the www, I have to ask you guys if this is something special or not.

Perhaps it would better to educate yourself on what "special" is, then you will know it when you see it. And please do not take that as snotty, as that is not my intention. But at some point you have to look past the names and the crowd favorites and start focusing on details of construction etc.

BMZ= Biemmezeta, a very big contract-builder in the '70s through the '90s. But this appears to be one of their early products made for a domestic market. It even has "drillium" on the dropout/forkends. I'd guess by that tubing decal that it's something custom from Columbus, maybe just for the step-thru/mixte frame.
For a look at a more modern BMZ product, check out the PaloAlto owned by bigbossman (edit, well on second though his may not be that much newer, but it's not much older, and it's different)

Guess what, Cicli Mondial still exist. They're an Italian workshop in the Venice region and have been around at least since the 70ies. Family business, I suppose, outfitters, not framebuilders. I contacted them to find out about a nice 70ies Reynolds frame I picked up last year, but it turned out 1) another small business about 100 miles away also sold bicycles under the Cicli Mondial name and 2) some third small business made Cicli Mondial stickers and sold them to anyone who liked them. At some point, in came the lawyers and things got straightened out. My frame was not made by them, the real Cicli Mondial I mean, or maybe I should say the surviving Cicli Mondial, because all of this I know because they told me, of course. (plus, my Italian is not even entry-level). Anyway, they have the logo with the horse (the other one is way nicer I think), and if you write them with pics I'm sure they will tell you more about your bike.

BMZ made some very nice frames in Clombus SL and SP for brands like Palo Alto and Performance. The pic shows prugnat lugs if I am not mistaken, and the drillouts on the rear dropout is for a campy chain holder that allows you to change wheels easier and without soiling your hands.
I own a BMZ-made performance campione. It has the same lugs, dropouts, and is made from Columbus SL. It rides nicely, and I would imagine that your bike does too. The choice of parts and lugs say to me that this bike is made of some nice tubing, probably columbus SL because of the size.
My bike has a BMZ stamp that is in plain block letters, dating it around 1984. Yours is probably newer.

Actually those are NOT the Portacatena holes (which consist of only 2 holes and not in the dropout clamp area) these are not functional holes, just decorative "drillium". I don't think they are Campagnolo dropouts, either, but some other brand, possibly Gipiemme or another Italian brand.

Thanks for that info, I was just going off a different thread that i remember seeing somewhere. I agree that those are not campy dropouts, they are some other decent forged drops. Cant tell from the pic.

He may be talking about a red one showing up today on the FB group "Steel is Real". That one's got some nice details and has a BMZ tubing decal. Same decal graphics as the mixte from 2011.

i put the pics also on the "steel is real" but without any positive feedback.
the dropouts are gipiemme and has this pantograph Record and a nice clove on the fork.
i don't have any other infos about it. i just have the bike and i will put Shimano 600 arabesque or 105 golden on it.

it was hard to find infos on internet with this generic names like "mondial" "record" "clove" "bike" "road" "cicli"
