Derailer wont shift through all gears?

I just put a 700c wheelset with a 9 speed cassette on my 1986 schwinn prelude. It has friction shifters (suntour) and the rear derailer(suntour cyclone) wont shift onto the 3 biggest cogs and also the smallest basically stay in the middle cogs only? anyone with suggestions?

I don't think the Cyclone can handle that large a gearing, someone may correct me though.

You might want to put this up on the Mechanics Forum. But I'll put my 2 cents in because I'm dealing with a similar problem.

If you take the chain off the crank rings so that it is loose, and untighten the RD cable; the pulleys should line up with the high(small) cog. If it doesn't, adjust the 'H' limit screw until it does. I don't think that there is any other reason why you couldn't shift onto the small cog. The large cog is another issue. With everything loose, swing the RD over to the large cog with your hand. If it stops before it reaches the low(large) cog, adjust the 'L' limit screw until it does. It may be that there is just not enough reach bewteen 'L' and 'H' on your 6/7 spd RD to reach the width of a 9 spd cassette.

There is also an issue with how large the large cog is. If your running a 28T or larger, your road derail may not have enough room to reach it.

I run a Cyclone GT with a 32T big cog with no issues. I'm reasonably sure It could handle 34T but I haven't tried it myself.

No, a 6 speed is the same width as a 7speed.

8, 9 and 10 are all the same width, but are wider than 6 or 7 speed.

+1 - The long-cage "GT" version of the Cyclone supposedly can swallow up to 34 teeth (depending on what DO you have).
but I don't know if the OP's DR is the long or short version.

If he has the GT, then I think the determinant will be the travel between "L" and "H" .
