I put this in the mechanics forum as well, but maybe C&V guys are more familiar with this Shimano 600 freewheel. It spins freely in both directions. It was pretty stiff when I found it with a CL bike find, I flushed it with WD40 on the hub and freed it up, but it still spins both ways. It seems like it wants to catch but doesn't. How do I remove this from the hub and is it repairable? I have tried to undo what looks like a threaded lock ring but it won't move easily. Maybe a special tool is needed. The inside of the freewheel is splined.

can you post a pic? you need a Shimano freewheel tool. it looks like the cassette tool but the splines are longer. the freewhee is built in two main parts. the outer part holds the cogs and rides on the inner part which has the paws and bearings.

the lockring you are working on is likely the part that holds the two halves together. you need a freewheel vise, or I think while mounted on the wheel, you could use a chain whip to hold the outer part while you losen the lock ring. watch out for bearings there are atleast 847 of those smelly things.

I would try the WD-40 thing again then dry it out and use tryflow

Need some pictures. How many cogs does the wheel have?

You could have a freehub and a cassette instead of a freewheel, and it could be the original UniGlide version of the freehub. Repairs are possible. It sounds as if the pawls have frozen in the "down" or "retracted" position, thus allowing the FW or FH to spin in either direction.

the 6208 is indeed a freewheel (and a darned nice one, Shimano 600 with sealed bearings). It's possible that the pawls are stuck. Unfortunately, because of the seals on that freewheel, it may be tricky to really soak the pawls wiht WD-40. I doubt that more than a tiny trickle can work its way in there. And then, there's no way for the gunked up grime to get out. You will have to take it apart.
